2. General • Wired network connection currently required • No wireless to laptops or printers • Recommended configuration • Our router connected to Internet Port • Network printer and laptops connected to router or (one or more) Ethernet switches

3. First Steps • Is Internet connectivity available at site? • Wired or wireless? • Is Internet connectivity available where we work? • If not, can we relocate or have made available? • Is connectivity wired? • If not, can wire be run for us • Do we have or can we obtain permission for use? • From Site contact • From Network Manager • Central Control – Multiple Sites • Town network • Stand alone

Issues/Solutions • Public versus Private • Most areas have both • Private is the one to be most careful of • We can use public • Wired versus Wireless • Again, most areas have both • We need a wired connection • Cabling • Avoid running cabling through overhead unless done in accordance with building codes • Network manager can usually suggest and arrange • Building codes, work orders, etc • Start early – lead time can be surprising!

Internet Speed/Reliability • If speed is acceptable (at least 800 kb/s), determine location of equipment and estimate number and length of cables required. • While some were less, most Morris County was at least 5Mb/s • Keep safety for both EFC’s and clients in mind when planning cable requirements • Don’t forget • Cabling from router to Internet • Cabling from router to switch(es) • Cabling from network printer to router (or switch)

Wrap Up • Can’t start too early • Now would be good! • Will have issues with permissions and wiring • Resolution can be found but takes time • Sites will have to deal with work orders, building codes, etc. • Morris County started in September and still had 3 sites incomplete mid January • Permissions and wiring are the difficult part • Testing, while important, is not time consuming • Remember to test before and after any wiring is done • Allow enough lead time to obtain routers, switches and cables
