  2. Asthma • Impaired breathing due to obstruction and inflammation of airways. • Severity vary from shortness of breath to death.

  3. Pathophysiology • With exposure to a trigger, a cascade of cellular responses result in: -Increased mucus production -Mucosal swelling -Bronchial muscle contraction

  4. Normal and asthmatic bronchiole

  5. -Smoking -Infections -Allergens • Exercise -Weather -Drugs -Food additives Triggers

  6. Asthma types: • According to the etiology, asthma classified to: • Extrinsic (atopic) asthma • Intrinsic (non-atopic) asthma

  7. Extrinsic asthma • Allergic for substances like: dust, fungi… • Usually onset at young age. • Other allergic manifestation in patients. • Due to genetic susceptibility.

  8. Intrinsic asthma • Non allergic. • Usually adult onset. • Often follows severe respiratory illness.

  9. Nocturnal asthma • Why asthma attack more common at night? • Because: -Core temp. decrease -Sleep homeostat -Circadian change

  10. Signs and symptoms • Different from one person to another. • Symptoms different from one asthma attack to another. • Having symptoms does not mean you have asthma.

  11. Signs and symptoms -shortness of breath -Tightness of chest -Signs of cold and allergens -Feeling very tired

  12. -Coughing after exercise -Blue lips -Trouble sleeping -wheezing & night coughing

  13. Spirometer & peak flow meter

  14. Metered dose inhaler(MDI)
