  2. Timeline • February 1, 2013 – Meeting with SBES Leadership (Instructional Council), APS Assoc. Superintendent Raquel Reedy, Colonel Lanning, Colonel Kubinec, Beth Mann • February 6, 2013 – Possibility of possible time change shared with SBES staff • Proposal taken to APS Transportation by Raquel Reedy • March 20, 2013 – Proposed new times and time change shared with SBES Instructional Council by Jamie Bell, APS Assoc. Superintendents’ Office • March 25, 2013 – Proposed time and APS process shared with SBES staff • March 27, 2013 – SBES staff voted on proposed time change (passed with 85% approval) • March 28, 2013 – Proposed new time and time change process shared at PTA Meeting • April 11, 2013 – Informational Community Meeting • April 15, 2013- Surveys go home (one per family, grades K-4 only) • April 19, 2013 – All family surveys due by 3:45pm • April 19, 2013 – IC tallies survey results • May 1, 2013 – APS Deadline for school to notify Assoc. Superintendent of the school’s decision to make the proposed changes for the 2013-14 school year

  3. Options – School Hours • Option 1 – Present Schedule Warning Bell: 8:48 Instructional Bell: 8:50 Dismissal M, T, Th, F: 3:45 Dismissal W: 12:35 • Option 2 – New Schedule - Eliminating early Wednesday dismissal Warning Bell: 7:40 Instructional Start: 7:43 Dismissal (Mon-Fri): 1:50

  4. District Required Process • Inform ES Associate Superintendent – February 1st & March 20th • Principal would present the proposal to the Instructional Council – March 20th • Proposal must meet the following requirements: • Gone through APS Transportation • 220 minutes of weekly teacher prep time • 990 Instructional hours per year • K-5 ES student instructional hours 5.5 w/30 minute lunch=6.0 • Teachers have 7.0 duty day (includes 30 minute duty free lunch) • Daycare and After School Programs informed • Cafeteria staff informed – look at breakfast program • Teacher duty schedule

  5. District Required Process Continued • IC will discuss the proposal and reach consensus if the proposed schedule change should be considered – March 20th • Appropriate Assoc. Superintendent is notified in writing of intent to start the schedule change process – March 20th • IC will decide the process to be used to inform families of the proposal and how to conduct the survey of parents and staff – March 20th • IC will be responsible for tallying the results of the survey responses from the parents and the staff – March 27th, April 19th • Staff members given information about the proposed schedule in a staff meeting – February 6th & March 27th • All staff members are surveyed – March 27th • The same set of standardized set of survey questions for parents used by all schools • There must be a 65% approval rate of the surveys returned by the staff for the process to move forward to the parents

District Required Process Continued • At least one evening meeting will be held to inform parents and the community of the proposed changes – March 28th and April 11th • Proposal will be published in the school newsletter/letter to parents – April 2013 Mustang News • Proposal will be posted on the school’s website and or the marquee, if available – Information shared via SBES website, SBES Parent Express (PTA) & PTA Facebook page • Parents will be surveyed – March 15-19 • The same set of standardized set of survey questions for parents will be used by all schools • There will be ONE survey per family • There will be a 65% approval rate of the surveys returned by the K-4 parents for a change to occur

Instructional Impact from SBES Staff • Less transition time in morning - for those students who go to daycare/before school programs • Wilting in the afternoon – last hour of the day is hard • Less instruction on Wednesday – due to early release • Trying to cram instruction into four days • Loss of consistent routine on Wednesday (instruction and lunch schedule) • Attendance – due to sports activity • Kids hungry – long morning (3-5), long afternoon (K-2) • Students who require meds, impact on time/dosage

  8. Home/Family Impact to Consider • BEDTIME - Kids need a recommended 9 hours of sleep every night, consistent bedtime and night time routines • HOMEWORK – Students can get homework completed sooner, especially if they have after school activities (sports, dance/cheer, music lessons, etc…) • DAYCARE – Less before school care, longer after school care • Youth Center – ~65 students before school (6:30am-8:20am), ~65 students after school M, T, Th, F & ~70 students on W • RGEC – ~20 students before school (6:30am-8:20am), ~30 students after school M, T, Th, F & ~40 students on W • La Petite – ~10 students before & after school (6:30am-8:20am) • APPOINTMENTS – Parents able to make appointments after school, less instruction missed

  9. Other APS Elementary Schools with Similar Hours - 43 There are 23 APS Elementary schools that have early release Wednesday There are 90 APS Elementary schools
