What Are ASEAN Materials ? • Materials written by the languages of each ASEAN country: Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Lao, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. • Materials written in English which produced in ASEAN countries. (3) Materials written in English which produced in countries other than ASEAN nations. (4) Materials written in other languages than English or languages of each ASEAN country.

Academic Libraries in Japan • “Standards of Higher Educational Institution” requires that every university, college, and other higher educational institutions have their own academic library system. • The number of academic libraries • 783 higher educational institution • 86 national • 92 local governments • 605 private • in addition, there is a lot of junior college.

  10. Special Libraries in Japan • Special libraries are various. • companies and corporations, both public and private bodies • foundations and organisations • The number of special libraries belonging to Japan Special Library Association • around 1,800.

  11. National Library in Japan • The National Diet Library (NDL) of Japan. • Service to the Diet • Service to the people • Main function • legal deposit library • bibliographic control • Buildings • two main libraries • Tokyo • Kansai • Branch • International Library for children's Literature

School Libraries in Japan • Mandatory settled in the schools • all primary schools, all junior high schools, and all senior high schools including all schools for students with special needs • The number of school libraries • 21,460 primary school libraries • 10,699 junior high school libraries • 5,022 high school libraries • 1,059 schools for students with special needs

Public Library in Japan • Mainly settled by local governments on the basis of “the Library Law” • a mission for providing services as an educational institution • not obligatory for local governments • The number of the local governments having at least one public library • 47 prefectures (100.0%) • 796 cities and Tokyo Metropolitan wards (98.4%) • 501 towns and villages (53.4%) • the number of library buildings including branches is 3,210 in total
