  1. Ronald Reagan The professional actor President 1981-1989

  2. Stat Box #1 • Name: Ronald Wilson Reagan • From: Illinois. He was born and raised in central Illinois and went to Eureka College in Eureka, IL. • VP: George H.W. Bush. He sought the Republican nomination in 1980 against Reagan, then became his VP for both terms, and after him became the first VP elected President since Martin Van Buren. • Party: Republican – People were mad at the Republicans because of Nixon, but after four years of Carter, they got over it. • Description: Considered fairly handsome when you was younger, he was (at the time) the oldest man to be President. When Trump took the oath of office he was one year older than Reagan was when he took it. • Personality: Soft-spoken but engaging, he was known as “The Great Communicator” for his frequent appearances on television explaining his administration’s policies.

  3. Stat Box #2 • Wife: Nancy. Reagan had been married and divorced once before in the 1940s. Both his first and second wives were actresses. Nancy was known to be somewhat abrasive, and regularly consulted with an astrologer. Reagan let that astrologer influence his appointments schedule. • Recreation: Despite his age, Reagan had a fully-equipped gym installed in the White House and used it daily. Like LBJ, Reagan also owned a huge ranch and while on vacation usually went there and worked on it. • Religion: Presbyterian. He said he was religious but rarely went to church. • Death: 2004. Age 93, after living with Alzheimer’s for 10 years.

  4. Before He Was President… • Reagan was a fairly successful Hollywood actor in the 1930s and 1940s. He became President of the Screen Actor’s Guild (the actor’s union) and helped with the investigations of communism in Hollywood in the 1950s. • He served two terms as the Governor of California in the 1970s.

  5. The Whooped • Reagan won both of his elections in huge landslide victories. The first was over President Carter. (489-49) • In 1984 he beat Walter Mondale, who had been Carter’s Vice President, even worse. (525-13) • Reagan’s 1984 victory was the biggest electoral victory in history where there was someone else running.

  6. What He Done Did • Reagan’s economic policies helped revitalize America. Unemployment and inflation went down and consumerism went up. • Reagan enacted what was known as the “Star Wars Initiative”, a new-age weapons program that the Soviet Union couldn’t keep up with financially or scientifically. Ultimately, this program bankrupted the Soviet Union and helped end the Cold War. • America was “down on itself” after Carter and the Iran hostage situation. More than any individual accomplishment, Reagan gave Americans a sense of the exceptionalism again. Patriotic pride hit a high not seen since WWII. • Reagan remains one of the most popular Presidents in American history.
