  2. Shelf-Life IA Task: Investigate 1 aspect which changes the shelf-life of food

  3. Shelf-Life IA Task: Investigate 1 aspect which changes the shelf-life of food • Foods which spoil quickly enough to study: • Berries • Broth • Dairy products • Cut apples • Bread • Hummus • Ideas/Examples: • Adding salt • Storage temperature • Cooking • Sugaring • Storage container changes (light, lid, material…)

  4. Example • Purpose Question: How does pH affect mold growth on chicken broth? • Boil 600mL of chicken broth for 5 minutes to destroy any living organisms • Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes • Sterilize 6 empty beakers in an autoclave • Fill each beaker with 100mL broth • Beaker 1= add 0.5mL of soap and 9.5mL of water • Beaker 2= add 1mL of soap and 9.0mL of water • Beaker 3= add 10mL of water • Beaker 4= add 5mL lemon juice and 5mL of water • Beaker 5= add 10mL lemon juice • Beaker 6= control • Measure the pH of each beaker • After 3days, observe each sample. Record the pH, amount of mold (ranked 0-5), and any qualitative observations • After 6 days, repeat the measurements If you only need the data collection and/or conclusion sections, you can use this expeiment
