Recall • Byzantine Emp. grows----spreads ideas of Christianity to other areas through rivers, and Mediterranean Sea. • One group begins to adopt the ideas of Christianity---the Slavs • Slavs located north of Black Sea • This combining of Greek (Byzantine) and Slavic traditions forms the Russian culture
Russia’s Birth • In 800’s adventurers called Varangians or “Rus” were first to inhabit area called eventually called Russia • 880 a nobleman named Oleg moved to Kiev, a city on the Dnieper River. This gave access to Constantinople—trade • Kiev became a principality---a small state ruled by a prince
Growth of Christianity • 957—Princess Olga visits Constantinople and converts to Christianity (remember this was most important Christian city in world at time) • 989---Her grandson—Vladimir (now prince) converts as well and forces all citizens to convert to Christianity---mass baptism in Dnieper River---(freedom of religion not an option)
Collapse of Kiev • Vladimir’s grandson (Yaroslav the Wise) improves Kiev, but once he dies it falls apart • He does not leave land to eldest son—divides land equally among three sons---fights begin • 1240—Mongols (nomadic invaders from eastern Russia) attack and destroy Kiev
Control By Mongols • Mongols allowed Russians their own customs and religion—but must pay taxes and be obedient • Ivan III---challenged Mongol rule—takes name Czar (Caesar) and sought to make Russia the 3rd Rome • 1480—Ivan’s army and Mongols faced off to fight—neither side attacked—simply went home—Russian liberation
