Pros: Removes around 95-99% of all contaminants from the water. Cons: RO Systems can be very costly. Some whole-home units can cost thousands of dollars. This does not even include what it will cost for installation of the unit. RO Systems can take anywhere from 3 to 4 hours to filter just one gallon. For every gallon of filtered water produced during the purification process, up to 20 gallons of water is disposed of and wasted. RO systems remove most of the minerals from the water leaving it with an acidic pH level Bottled Water Core Concept: Drinking water that is packaged in plastic or glass water bottles. How it works: Typically, water is sourced, purified using a multi-step purification process, and then bottled by a manufacturer. Convenient. Pros: Clean filtered purified water. Cons: Bottled water can be very costly. If you compare bottled water next to tap water, the cost difference can be astronomical. Tap water costs fluctuate closely around $0.002 per gallon. Bottled water can range anywhere from $0.89 per gallon to over $8.26 per gallon. These findings are based on a documented report in 2007, from the Food and Water Watch Administration. Bottled water is most certainly not environmentally friendly. According to the Container Recycling Institute, statistics have shown that as much as 86% of plastic bottles are discarded in the trash rather than being recycled. They will reduce chlorine, but are not effective at removing VOCs, heavy metals, endocrine disruptors or fluoride.
