What is Counterculture? • A culture with values or lifestyles in opposition to those of the established culture. • An era of time in the 1960’s and 1970’s where people questioned America’s materialism and cultural and political norms.
Hippies • Lived in the Age of Aquarius • Had long hair, wore colorful clothes, and lived in communes. • They used drugs for greater self-awareness and inner peace. • Held protest and did not believe in war.
Beliefs • Life should be lived in peace, love, and harmony. • American Society had grown hollow. • Rebellion against the government. • Practiced Zen Buddhism.
Art • Discovery of “Pop” art. • Andy Warhol was the most popular counterculture artist. • Usually very colorful and full of culture. • Left a lasting imprint of American culture.
Fashion • People grew longer hair. • Men had beards and mustaches. • Women dressed for color and comfort. • Natural and peaceful.
Music • Brought out the rise of Rock music. • Allowed teenagers a voice of rebellion and protest. • The Beatles were the most famous rock band of the time.
Woodstock Music and Art Fair • The most famous event of rock history! • Had an attendance of about 500,000 people. • Located on a 600 acre farm in Bethel, New York. • Had 32 music performances. • Gave people nearly three days and night of non-stop peace, love, and rock and roll.
The Beatles • The most Famous rock band of the Age of Aquarius. • Consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, and George Harrison. • Influenced hippies and the counterculture movement.
Drugs • LSD and Marijuana were commonly used drugs to help explore the inner mind and achieve harmony. • LSD was invented Timothy Leary. • Believed to help achieve greater self-awareness and inner peace.
Make Love, Not War • Many people protested the Vietnam War. • War was believed to be unnecessary. • Many protested society by leaving it. • Counterculture became dangerous.
The Decline of Counterculture • People gave away to violence and disillusionment. • Communes became violent. • People became homeless. • Charles Manson murdered Sharon Tate.
Counterculture Lives On! • It influenced America’s culture today. • It changed the style of music forever. • It will never be forgotten.
