  3. How can we check if this model is correct? Cut a nail in half. Why? What would this do? OK. Go ahead and do it.

  4. Did it work? • Back to the drawing board. How might you adjust your model? • Finally….

  5. Nature of Inquiry • What did we do? • Observed things • Accessed prior understandings • Made inferences • Tested ideas • Communicated ideas, maybe even argued • Reconsidered ideas after critical analysis • Made some new inferences • Tested ideas again • Got some expert help at a critical moment

  6. How is this different from what you already do? • Context • Explicit nature of the ordering of inquiry. • Expectations of the nature of the end result of the inquiry. • Belief in subjectivity vs objectivity.

  7. So… in integrating STEM into your classroom… • Be explicit when you engage your students in something that is part of the inquiry skillset. AND • Use STEM contexts for activities that you already do. • Examples….

  8. Nightfall by Isaac Asimov • Full text http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/fwalter/AST389/TEXTS/Nightfall.htm • Story • Ideas
