Oceans • Oceans are very big and beautiful. • They cover 75% of the world! It provides a home for over 1 million d different kinds of species.
North Pacific Gyre • But now oceans are being polluted because people keep throwing trash right into the ocean. If people would have tried not to throw away trash they would not have been as polluted. • All the trash that is being thrown into the ocean is forming into one big garbage patch which is called the north pacific gyre. It floats in a circular pattern around the world collecting more and more garbage.
North pacific gyre • This big garbage patch has caused a lot of animals to suffer such as birds who have ate the garbage. • The north pacific gyre is twice the size of Texas!
Cargo spills • Cargo spills have also contributed to the size of the North Pacific Gyre. • The most famous was the loss of about 80,000 Nike sneakers and boots from the ship Hansa Carrier in 1990. The currents of the gyre distributed the shoes around the shores of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii over the following three years
