  1. Material damage test beam at ATF • Goals of phase 1 test: ATF Feb-Mar 2008 • Commission test system of multi-axis mover, beam position and size monitoring • Validate single pulse operation/beam control • Ensure radiation protection requirements can be satisfied before a second phase proposal. • Simple measurement: size of the damage region after single bunch impacts on test sample – validate FLUKA/ANSYS • Goal of phase 2 test at ATF2 • Measure the shock waves within the sample by studying the surface motion with VISAR (or LDV), for single bunch and multiple bunches at approximate ILC bunch spacing. FLUKA simulations Melted area vs. charge density

  2. 11 mm We gained experience in working at ATF and commissioning the mover system, beam control and instrumentation. (George Ellwood)

  4. Phase 1 of Damage Test Beams at ATF-KEK Two 100mm Ti alloy target, exposed to ATF beam. Sample 1: examined with interferometer at ATF, not expected to be damaged (beam parameters) Sample 2: measured with SEM in UK. No convincing sign of damage. Extent of damage (melted surface) measured compared to what FLUKA simulations predict Predicted damage from 1 bunch (9x109) to 3 bunches (3.6x1010). Calculated beam sizes of 15x2 to 15x5 mm2 (James Jones). y hits / mm x hits / mm
