  10. A young whale got stuck in the harbor today. The whale was small and had been born recently.

  11. Some people saw that the whale was in trouble. They called the police.

  12. Soon help was on the way. Jenny Litz arrived first. She is a scientist who examines whales.

  13. Jenny looks at every part of the whale to see if it is healthy. A whale is a mammal, which means it needs air to breathe.

  14. Jenny checked the whale’s heartbeat and breathing. She said the whale seemed normal.

  15. There were no signs of illness or injury.

  16. Next, Jenny checked to see if hunger was a problem. Going a long time without food can be dangerous for a whale.

  17. But this whale seemed healthy and well fed.

  18. The helpers acted fast. They kept the whale wet. The tide came in slowly. The water got deeper.

  19. Soon the whale could swim again. At last, the whale was rescued. Its life was saved by Jenny and the other helpers.

  30. The harbor seal pup is 2 weeks old. Her name is Sidney. Sidney stays close to her mother.

  31. Sidney drinks her mother’s milk.

  32. Waves crash on the rocky beach. Harbor seal families lie in the warm sun.

  33. Sidney and her mom lie in the warm sun too.

  34. Sidney’s mother gets hungry. She dives into the cold water to catch fish.

  35. The water is too cold for Sidney. She stays on the shore and waits for her mother.

  44. Sidney is brought to a sea mammal center. A scientist named Peter is in charge.

  45. Peter takes care of young seals that are brought to the center. He lifts the thin pup from the cage.

  46. Sidney is weak from hunger. Peter knows just what to do. He puts a tube in Sidney’s mouth.

  47. Then Nicole pumps a drink into Sidney’s stomach. The drink is just like a mother seal’s milk.
