Supply List • (8) 3-prong pocket folders (Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Homework, Music, Computer Lab, and Science Lab • (2)  spiral notebooks (Social Studies) • (5) composition notebooks(1 for Reading, 2 for Math and 2 for Science) • (2) packs of lined notebook paper (more will be needed throughout the  year).   • (1) pencil pouch • (1) covered pencil sharpener  (optional)    • pencils (mechanical are fine) • crayons/markers/pencil crayons (your choice) • checking pens (any colors)   glue or glue sticks scissors • 2 boxes of tissues • 1 backpack ***No rolling ones please*****   • *****If your student has challenges with organization and you have used other materials in the past with success, I am ok with your student using whatever works best for them*****

  9. GRADES/GRADED ASSIGNMENTS A SUMMATIVE PORTFOLIO OF EACH STUDENT’S WORK WILL BE KEPT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THEREFORE, GRADED PAPERS WILL NOT BE SENT HOME BUT WILL BE PLACED IN THE STUDENT’S PORTFOLIO. YOU WILL FIND THE ON-LINE PARENT ASSIST PROGRAM BENEFICIAL IN REVIEWING STUDENTS GRADES AND PROGRESS. AT ANY TIME, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REVIEW A GRADED ASSIGNMENT JUST DROP THE TEACHER A NOTE AND WE CAN SEND THE ASSIGNMENT HOME. STUDENTS ARE GRADED ON A 7 POINT GRADING SCALE AS FOLLOWS: 93-100 = A 85-92 = B 77-84 = C 70-76 = D Below 70 is an F

  10. Webpages, Tuesday Packets, & Time for Kids WEBPAGE: EACH 5TH GRADE TEACHER WILL MAINTAIN A CLASSROOM WEBPAGE WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE SEDGE GARDEN WEBSITE. PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS PAGE AS A FAVORITE ON YOUR HOME COMPUTER. CHECK THE WEBPAGES OFTEN AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION SUCH AS CLASS NEWSLETTERS AND SOME HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS. THIS IS ALSO THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT EACH TEACHER. TUESDAY FOLDERS: YOUR CHILD IS EXPECTED TO BRING THEIR TUESDAY FOLDER TO YOU EACH TUESDAY (PLEASE EXPECT THIS AND ASK TO SEE IT IF THEY DO NOT BRING IT TO YOU ON THEIR OWN). THIS FOLDER OFTEN HAS INFORMATION FROM THE TEACHER, PRINCIPAL, OR SCHOOL. IT CAN ALSO HAVE FIELD TRIP INFORMATION. Manila folders are used for report cards. TIME FOR KIDS & NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC- WE WILL BE COLLECTING $6.00 FOR TIME FOR KIDS ISSUES. STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE TFK MAGAZINE EVERY WEEK. THESE MAGAZINES ARE NEWSPAPERS FOR STUDENTS WITH CURRENT NEWS. WE US THESE MAGAZINES DURING READING AND SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES. IF FOR ANY REASON YOU CANNOT PAY THE $6.00 FOR THE MAGAZINES, PLEASE SEE ME.

  11. VOLUNTEERING ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST COMPLETE AN ON-LINE VOLUNTEER SERVICE APPLICATION; THE APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AND APPROVED PRIOR TO BEGINNING ANY VOLUNTEER WORK. YOU MAY COMPLETE THE APPLICATION BY VISITING THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WEBSITE. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR APPLICATION PLEASE CONTACT ANA KIRSTINE AT 336-771-4545. NOTE - IT TAKES 45 DAYS FOR APPLICATION TO BE PROCESSED, SO PLEASE SUBMIT APPLICATION AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

  12. End of Quarter & End of Grade TestingAt the end of each quarter, students will have an End of Quarter Test that will access the objectives taught that quarter. This information is used by teachers to help students in areas that were not mastered and need extra support.

  13. Reading Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact). Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem Describe how a narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events are described.

  14. Language Arts Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.)

Science Fair • This year in 5th grade your student will be required to complete a science fair project. • Students will receive an information packet the last week of October. • They will have 6 weeks to work on their science projects at home • Project proposals must be approved by the science teacher before students can begin working on them. Models will not be approved.

  19. Homework ACCORDING TO THE GUIDELINES SET BY WINSTON SALEM/ FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLS, FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS AVERAGE 45 TO 75 MINUTES OF HOMEWORK EACH NIGHT. HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY WITH SOME SPECIAL PROJECTS REQUIRING INDEPENDENT WORK THAT MAY BE DONE ON WEEKENDS. PLEASE CHECK INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS’ WEBSITES FOR SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS. STUDENTS SHOULD WRITE HOMEWORK IN THEIR AGENDA EACH DAY. Children will be given the responsibility of writing down their homework at the beginning of each block. By doing so, children are becoming independent learners and are developing the necessary skills needed for middle school. Random agenda checks will occur throughout the year.

  21. Finances • You may pay for your field trips with cash, credit or debit card or checks. If you would like to use a credit or debit card, please access ‘On-Line School Pay’ at the following web-site: http://osp.osmsinc.com/wsfcs. If you would like to pay by check, we will gladly accept your check. The WSFCS system has contracted with ‘Envision Payment Solutions’ to collect all bad check debts and there will be an automatic $25.00 collection fee assessed for each check which fails to clear the bank for insufficient funds or any other reason, regardless of the amount. • You are able to give scholarships with any field trip to provide aid to fellow classmates. • If possible, when sending cash, please send exact change. The school will not make change for your student.

  22. Tardiness, Attendance, and Early Dismissal School starts at 7:50 A.M. The first bell rings at 7:50 and the tardy bell rings at 8:20. Morning work is given each day while students are coming in and unpacking. This is a requirement and a good review for your student. If a student is absent, a note must be provided upon their return or it will be recorded as an unexcused absence. Students are working all day until dismissal. We strongly encourage any student appointments to be scheduled after school hours. Changes of afternoon transportation need to be made no later than 11 am. Emergency situations may occur and will be dealt with accordingly.

  23. Power School Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools are currently transitioning from NC Wise to Power School. This will be our new way to record attendance as well as grades. This will be available for parents to look at student progress by October 1st.

  25. Snacks, Water Bottles, & Celebration Water and healthy snacks are permitted. Sugary drinks/snacks will not be allowed. Please do not bring flavored packets to add to your water. If you are celebrating your child’s birthday, you may bring treats to the cafeteria during their scheduled lunch time. Please make sure there is enough for every student in the class. 5th grade does not participate in an end of the year party. Instead, we will be having the 5th Grade Celebration in the new gym where families can come and share the successes with the future class of 2020.

  26. Conferences • If you would like to schedule a conference, please sign the conference sheet located at the door. • We encourage parent/teacher communication. We will find a time that works for both the teacher and parent.
