  1. Schema Activator • Read the document “And you thought English was easy ???” • Respond in your journals to the following questions: • Which line resonated most with you? How does this reveal the complexity of the English language? Is learning English easy?

Debate Preparation • Break into your groups • Review your major arguments for your side • Read and identify the major arguments for the opposing side • Brainstorm ways to disclaim opposing arguments • Be sure all participants are ready to participate – the expectation is that all individuals will participate

  3. Debate Expectations • Respectful discourse • “I agree with _________ because……” • “I respectfully disagree with __________ because….” • Recording notes of significant points • Limited side conversation, only relevant to the debate

  4. Assimilation • The process in which a person forsakes his or her own cultural tradition to become part of a different culture • A major part of the assimilation process for immigrants in the US is learning English • In the United States often referred to as becoming “Americanized”

  5. Naturalization • The process of becoming an American citizen • Several criteria: • Living for a certain amount of time in the United States • Being an “upstanding” citizen • Taking a test in English • Naturalization video
