  1. Schema Activator • Look at the maps that you and your classmates drew at the end of last class. • What do the majority of the maps have in common? • What does this say about American culture?

  2. Essays, Grades, Learning Objectives • Final Draft due next Thursday 10/27! • Helpful to grade and requirement in portfolio • Portfolio is part of your final grade • Grade print outs kept in portfolio • UNIT 2 - What learning objectives have we already covered?

Critical Thinking: Ethnocentrism • Respond to the questions independently. • Discuss the questions in group and record your response. • Record Ms. Skoglund’s sociological perspective. • Yes, humans naturally view the world in relation to what they know. It is natural to consider all other cultures in comparison to yours. • Ethnocentrism can manifest in negative ways like stereotypes, racism, and inequality. But, ethnocentrism also provides group cohesion and loyalty. • Yes, we all are ethnocentric to some degree. The goal is to be aware that you understand others in relation to your own culture and to not be negative or judgmental towards other cultures.

  4. Nonmaterial culture • What is it? • Arguably most significant component of culture

  5. Values • Standards by which groups define what is desirable and undesirable • Indicate in a culture what is good and bad, beautiful and ugly, etc. • Values underlie our preferences, guide our choices, and indicate what we hold worth while in life • What are things that are valued at GPA?

  6. Norms The expectations (or rules of behavior) that develop out of a group’s values Developed from norms What norms are developed from the values we have at GPA?

  7. Sanctions • The reactions people receive for following or breaking norms • Positive sanctions:approval of a norm • Material= trophy, money, prize • Nonmaterial= hugs, smiles, high fives • Negative sanctions:disapproval for breaking a norm • Material = being fined in court • Nonmaterial= harsh words, gestures (frowns), stares, clenched jaws • What sanctions do we have to enforce the norms at GPA?

  8. Ticket – To - Leave • Value = material comfort (having nice things) • What are the norms or expectations created from this value? • What is a positive sanction used to reinforce this norm? • What is a negative sanction to reinforce this norm?
