  4. UNITED NATIONS: A Brief History 24 October 1945 The UN Charter wasratified by the majority of its 51 signatory States Today 192 countries are members of the United Nations

The UN Charter: We the Peoples of the United Nations…United for a Better World 4 Main Purposes of the United Nations • to maintain international peace and security; • to develop friendly relations among nations; • to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights; • to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNITED NATIONS IN CAMBODIA The UN and Cambodia in the 1970’s: • Between 1975 and 1979, UN programmes in Cambodia were suspended • Early relief assistance began in 1979 (UNICEF and the ICRC coordinated the response) • UNDP, UNHCR, WFP, UNESCO and WHO contributed to these emergency relief operations
