  2. What is a Double Replacement Reaction? • Involves an exchange of positive ions between two compounds

  3. Formula: Steps to solve a double replacement reaction : 1- Find the cations(+) & anions(-) in each compound 2- Pair a cation(+) with an anion(-) from the other compound 3- From step 2 write to new formula

  4. Fact: • One type of double replacement reaction is a neutralization reaction. This helps keep the PH level right in pools. • Double replacement reactions help remove rust and tarnish.

  5. 1st Condition • One product is only slightly soluble and precipitates from solution leaving the other product dissolved in solution. Example: Na2S(aq) + Cd(NO3)2(aq) → CdS(s) + 2NaNO3(aq)

  6. 2nd Condition • One product is a gas that bubbles out of the mixture. Example: 2NaCN(aq) + H2SO4(aq) → 2HCN(g) + Na2SO4(aq)

  7. 3rd Condition • One product is a molecular compound such as water, which separates from the ions in a solution as intact molecules. Example: Ca(OH)2(aq) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

  8. Example: FeS + HCl→ ? A) FeH + ClS B) FeCl2 + H2S C) FeCl + HS D) FeH2 + ClS2

  9. Homework Problem! Write the products of these double replacement reactions. Then balance each equation. A- AgNO3 + NaCl → ? B- NaCl + H2SO4 → ? C- KOH + H2SO4 → ?
