Nouns • Nouns: Person, place, thing, or idea • Common Nouns: Names person, places, things, or ideas that are not capitalized. VS. • Proper Nouns: Name a particular person, place, thing, or idea that is capitalized. • Concrete Nouns: names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the sense ( sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell). VS. • Abstract Nouns: Names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.
Pronouns • Pronoun: A word that is used in place of one or more nouns in pronouns. • Antecedents: The word a pronoun refers to. • Personal Pronouns: Refers to the one speaking (1st person), the one spoken to (2nd person), or one being spoken to (3rd person). • Demonstrative Pronouns: Used to point out a specific person, place, thing, or idea. • Interrogative Pronouns: Introduces a question.

Adjectives • Adjectives: A word use to modify a noun or pronoun. • Demonstrative Adjective: Modifies nouns or pronouns. • Pronouns are replacing nouns while adjectives describe them. • Articles: Are the words a, an, and the.
Verbs • Verb: A word that is used to express action or a state of being. • Helping Verbs: Helps the main verb express action or a state of being. • Action verbs: Express either physical or mental action. VS. • Non-action Verbs: Are words that don’t express physical action and only mental.
Adverb • Adverb: Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Adverb Modifying Adjectives (example) • Slightly cooler temperature are forecasts. • Mr. Lomazzi is an especially talented chef.

Prepositions • Prepositions: A word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word.
Examples Commonly used prepositions • The Saint Bernard slept near my bed. • The Saint Bernard slept under my bed. • The Saint Bernard slept on my bed. • The Saint Bernard slept beside my bed.
Conjunctions • Conjunction: a word that joins a word group or words together. • Coordinating conjunctions: Joins word or word groups that are used the same way. • Correlative conjunction: Pairs of conjunctions that are used the same.
Interjections • Interjection: a word that shows emotion
