Parts of Speech. Prepositions. A word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. The other word is called the Object of the Preposition Ex. It was underneath the table. Ex. He went through the tunnel. Prepositions.

  2. Prepositions • A word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. • The other word is called the Object of the Preposition • Ex. It was underneath the table. • Ex. He went through the tunnel.

  3. Prepositions • The most common relationships that prepositions show are : • Time: after, at, before, during • Location: above, below, next to, within • Direction: toward, through, across • Cause & Effect: because of, instead of, in regard to

  4. Prepositions • Many prepositions consist of more than one word • Words often used in combination are : to, for, from, of • Many preposition words are also words used as adverbs • Prepositions MUST have an object of the preposition

  5. Preposition • Adverb or Preposition? • 1. Joe Louis sidled around the rink. • 2. The boxer slowly looked around. • 3. My thoughts went around and around • 4. They are waiting near the door • 5. The machine age developed around several inventions.

  6. Conjunctions • Join words or word groups • FANBOYS:

  7. Correlative Conjunctions • Conjunctions that work in pairs to join equal elements • Both…and • Either…or • Neither…nor

  8. Conjunctive Adverbs • Adverbs used as conjunctions to connect complete ideas • Often used as transitions • Furthermore • However • Instead • Nevertheless • Otherwise

  9. Interjections • Expresses emotion. An interjection has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence. • Ex. Ah ha! I found it. • Hey • Ouch • Whew • Wow

  10. Mastering the Parts of Speech • Write a single sentence containing one of each part of speech, label the parts • Ex. Wow! That angry dog quickly ran down the street and he bit the mailman.
