  2. Theories of First Settlers • Bering Land Bridge-People migrated here during the last Ice Age • They were called Paleo-Indians • They were hunter-gatherer people • Where they settled determine their culture.

  3. First Known Settlers • Olmec • First Pyramids • Mayans • Hunter-Gathers • Aztecs • Warrior type people • Built Tenochtitian (Mexico City) • Incas

  4. North America Early Cultures • Anasazi(1500 BC-1300 AD • Four Corners Region • Pueblos • Kivas • Mound Builders (1000 BC-1700ish AD) • Midwest-Along Mississippi and it’s tributaries • Built huge mounds for religious purposes.

  5. Native Americans in North America • There are 560 recognized Native American tribes in the United States • Such a diversity in culture • Only got the label because Europeans called them Indians
