Classroom Environment Rules created by the students : • Treat people the way you want to be treated. • Do not touch things that are not yours. • Focus and finish your work. • Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
All-Stars Club • Earn All-Star tickets to be a member • 3 tickets needed • Special privileges: • Random no homework passes • Can use gel pens in class • First in line • Positive phone call home • Sit with a friend for the day • Teacher helper in another room
Morning Meeting • Takes between 10-15 minutes. • We begin by greeting each other. Then we may have a sharing and a group activity. • A great way to build community, set a positive tone, increase excitement about learning, and improve academic and social skills.
Student Responsibilities at Home • Bring home completed agenda and homework folder every night. • Weekly Reading Log-due on Friday • Daily Math Homework-bring home math notebook to use as resource • 1 long-term project each marking period-guidelines provided
What are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? • a state-led effort coordinated by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association • to provide a single set of clear and consistent educational standards in math and English language arts • ensure that all students are receiving a high quality education consistently, from school to school and state to state • provide parents and educators with clear expectations for what children should know and be able to do when they graduate high school or advance to a particular grade level
Delaware Standards vs. Common Core Delaware State Content Standards Common Core State Standards • Clear expectations for what students in each grade level should learn and be able to do in math and ELA • Specific to Delaware students • Created in 1990’s • Clear expectations for what students in each grade level should learn and be able to do in math and ELA • Specific to students in all states that adopted CCSS • Created in 2010
Impact of CCSS on Teaching and Learning in ELA “Shifts” to Align to CCSS Changes in Classroom: • Increase reading informational text and text complexity • Build Academic Vocabulary • Text-based answers • Use selected stories from Storytown- but incorporate novels and nonfiction text and articles • Word Wall focuses on content vocabulary • Less emphasis on multiple choice and more on written responses
“Shifts” to Align to CCSS • Increase Writing from Sources • Literacy Instruction in all Content Areas Changes in Classroom • More research based writing • More use of technology as a resource and a tool • Additional time to teach writing on Friday mornings • Change in schedule to provide “Content Based Literacy” • Integrate social studies – use historical fiction and nonfiction articles/text to teach concepts
Impact of CCSS on Teaching and Learning in Math “Shifts” to Align to CCSS • Focus • Fluency Changes in the Classroom • Use Investigations in Number, Data, and Space-but continue to revise and supplement lessons to meet CCSS • Weekly “Hot Shots” test • Math Fluency Centers • Sites on Class website for facts/basic skills practice at home
“Shifts” to Align to CCSS • Deep Understanding • Application Changes in the Classroom • Math notebook-graphic organizers, visuals, and notes • Continue to incorporate more writing and speaking about understanding of a math concept (Problem of the Day and Number Talks) • More work with extended math tasks and “real world” situations
