  2. Farming . . . What is it? • Farming is the practice of producing goods by growing crops or raising animals. Farming is also known as “agriculture”. • 3rd largest industry in Canada bringing in $29 billion • In the 1880’s 80% of Canadian families had farm land, today only 3% of families have land

  3. Crop Farming • Crop farming is the growing of plants. Crops can be anything from wheat to strawberries. • Most crop farming is completed in the Prairies

  4. Animal Farming • Animal farming is the use of livestock, including anything from pigs to emus. • Almost half of all animal farming is completed in Alberta

  5. Who decides what is grown where? • Natural factors that determine the location of farming: • Soil fertility • Amount of precipitation • Length of growing season • Human factors that determine the location of farming: • Cost of land • Transportation costs • Competition

  6. The Role of Technology in Farming • Technology has lead to 3 major outcomes in the farming industry: • The farming population has decreased • Farm sizes have increased • The number of farms has decreased Change to Farming Legend Farm Road Water 1cm = 10 km March 1, 2014
