  17. PSLE - a placement exam • Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils within their peers • Places pupils into different courses according to their academic ability • Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  18. Are they raw scores? What is PSLE Aggregate Score? It is a sum of scores. What are these scores? St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  19. The PSLE Aggregate Score • incorporates performance of pupils in all 4 subjects • allows pupils to be ranked fairly St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  20. Why are RAW SCORES not used ? • Different subjects have different levels of difficulty • So are the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread = standard deviation) St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  21. MEASURE OF S P R E A D Narrow Wide St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  22. H U R R A Y ! I scored 85% in both English and Mother Tongue ! Lily St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  23. Her performance in MT is very close to that of other pupils 85% • She did much better in EL as compared to other pupils Lily scores 85% in both EL and MT EL MT 0 100 EL ave = 60 MT ave = 80 St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  24. Transformed Score or T-Score A need for standardisation of the raw scores St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  25. What is T-Score? • It gives the relative position of a pupil’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject • The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good she is as compared to others St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  26. How is T-Score calculated for each subject? (X - Y)   T 50 10 Z where X: pupil’s mark for the subjectY: average mark (mean) scored by all pupils Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation) St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  27. (50 - 68.0) 14.0 Example: • Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0 • Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68.0 • Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 14.0 T = 50 + 10 = 37.14 St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  28. How is the Aggregate Score calculated? By adding the T-Scores of the 4 subjects St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  29. Example: Subject Total Mark T-Score EL1 200 105 34 CL2 200 152 51 Maths 100 67 53 Science 100 58 47 Aggregate: 185 St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  30. Finally, all pupils are ranked according to their Aggregate Scores St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  31. Posting to Secondary School • All pupils are ranked by merit according to their PSLE Aggregate Scores • Thus, a pupil will be considered for admission for her choice of school before another pupil who has not performed as well in the PSLE • This is subject to availability of places in the school of choice St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  32. Posting by Postal District • If the pupil fails to get into any school of her choice as she has failed to meet the cut-off score of her choices, she will be posted to a school nearest to your home • She must still meet that school’s lowest cut-off score • Therefore, if you have shifted / are planning to shift within the year, please inform the school of your new address BEFORE November St Anthony’s Canossian Primary

  33. Affiliation • Affiliation ONLY applies when the 1st choice secondary school selected is St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary • If SACSS is NOT placed as the 1st choice, the pupil then does NOT enjoy the privilege of the affiliation St Anthony’s Canossian Primary
