LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD. Is a Registered Provider with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems. Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to CES Records for AIA members. Certificate of Completion for non-AIA members are available on request. This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.
Objectives • Participants will be educated about the implementation schedule for the new LEED 2009 rating system. • Participants will be able to identify key components of the rating system including updated standards, requirements, and credit requirements. • Participants will be educated about the changes to the LEED credentialing system including the new code of ethics and continuing education requirements. • Participants will be educated about the environmental life cycle ratings and the new emphasis on regionally appropriate building design and construction.
LEED 2009 – What is it? LEED 2009 or LEED v3.0 is a harmonization and revision of the following LEED rating systems: • LEED for New Construction (LEED-NC) • LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) • LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED-EB) • LEED for Core and Shell (LEED-CS) • LEED for Schools (LEED-Schools) LEED for Neighborhood Development, LEED for Homes, and other forthcoming rating systems will be added at a later date.
LEED 2009 – Credit Changes In general, the credit are largely the same, but now reflect updated standards and are a bit more stringent: • Credits using ASHRAE standards reference 2007 editions instead of current 2004 editions. • 20% water use reduction now a prerequisite instead of voluntary point. Credits across systems have been harmonized and clarified: • Common credits in LEED-NC, LEED-CI, LEED-CS, and LEED-Schools systems are now all identical. • Credit interpretation requests and rulings have been folded into requirements.
LEED 2009 – Scoring Changes Current Systems • LEED NC – 26, 33, 39, 52 • LEED CI – 21, 27, 32, 42 • LEED EB – 34, 43, 51, 68 • LEED CS – 23, 28, 34, 45 • LEED School – 29, 37, 44, 58 • 2009 Systems • Nuthin’: 0-39 points • Certified: 40-49 points • Silver: 50-59 points • Gold: 60-79 points • Platinum: 80-110 points • All current and future credits weightings will be determined using EPA’s “Tools for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and Other Environmental Impacts” aka TRACI. LEED 2009 – Regional Credits Up to four points available for earning up to four of “six Regional Priority Credits… identified as having additional regional environmental performance by USGBC Regional Councils and Chapters for the project’s location.” Source: US Drought Monitor Specific credit’s have yet to be defined by USGBC.

LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Three Tiers TIER I – GREEN ASSOCIATE Covers general materials for LEED, but not the technical details of the individual rating systems (ie. you don’t need to know the difference between ASHRAE 55 and ASHRAE 62.1) TIER II – LEED AP+ Builds on Green Associate exam and tests credit knowledge of specific credit details and regulations. Test should be taken by those actually working on LEED projects. TIER III – LEED AP FELLOW Designated for . Source (all images)GBCI.org
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Eligibility Requirements Current Test Any monkey can take it.
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Eligibility Requirements New Exam Tier I - Green Associate Employed OR in schools with green building component OR “Document involvement in support of LEED projects.”
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Eligibility Requirements New Exam Tier II - LEED AP+ “Document work on a LEED project, within the last two-three years, with verification through LEED Online or employer attestation.”
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Eligibility Requirements New Tier III - LEED AP Fellow “We’re going to take our time with this through the year.” Requirements not yet announced
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – New Exam Tracks • Current Exam Tracks • LEED for New Construction • LEED for Commercial Interiors • LEED for Existing Buildings • LEED 2009 Tier II Exam Tracks • Buildings Design and Construction • Commercial Interiors Design and Construction • Operations and Maintenance • Homes • Neighborhood Design
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Legacy AP’s "What do legacy LEED APs have to do? Nothing..." Beth Holst, VP of Credentialing at GBCI during Greenbuild 2008 Yeah, BUT… • Must agree to disciplinary policy and code of ethics • Must agree (and pay for!) continuing education requirements • If you decide to do this, you will be awarded Tier II - LEED AP+ status in the category of the test you’ve taken. • If you decide NOT to do this, you will be listed as an “inactive” LEED AP.
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Code of Ethics/Disciplinary Policy Sets means by which GBCI can suspend or revoke LEED AP status. Generally contains typical boilerplate (be truthful, be in compliance GBCI rules and regulations, don’t misrepresent status, etc.) with a few interesting clauses: • Numerous restrictions for felons, even when not related to design and construction • Can report violations of others to the GBCI, even anonymously • No current rules related to not being ‘green’ enough
LEED ‘Credentialing’ – Maintenance • Tier I – Green Associate • 15 hours – 3 LEED specific • Tier II – LEED AP+ • 30 hours – 6 LEED specific • Tier III – LEED AP Fellow • ??? – Presumably same as AP+ Above lists hours required for every TWO years, as that is the schedule that future LEED system revisions will follow. $50 ‘maintenance fee’ required for every TWO years. This fee is waived for the first two years for current APs who decided to enroll between July 1st, 2009 and July 1st 2011. AIA, PE, and other continuing education programs will overlap, though details on what is and is not eligible have not been defined.
