  4. Global TB trends • TB incidence falling >1% per year but number growing with population • 9.7 new cases of TB in 2007 • 1.7 million co-infected with HIV • Around 500,000 cases MDR-TB emerge each year

  6. ICN TB/MDR-TB Project • Aims to build global nursing capacity to respond to the growing challenge of TB and MDR-TB by • Training nurse trainers • Developing practical teaching and learning materials • Advocacy and representation

  7. Training of trainers (TOT) • In collaboration with National Nurses Associations in 18 countries with high TB/MDR-TB burden by end 2011 • Over 850 nurses trained as trainers in 14 countries to date • 18000 nurses and allied health workers have so far received training from these trainers

  9. Nurses…… • Are the first point of call for people with symptoms • Are exposed to resistant TB where no treatment available and infection control is ineffective • Are crucial to planning and implementation of effective infection control
