WP2 Objectives • Ensures the entire project networking activities • Strong interaction with SAs and JRAs • Five strands of work • WP2-1 Strategy definition • WP2-2 Workshops • WP2-3 Comminuty dissemination • WP2-4 International co-operation on the definition of IVOA standards • WP2-5 Liaison with other communities Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  3. WP2 deliverables Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  4. WP2-1 Strategy definition Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  5. WP2-1 Objectives • Definition and monitoring of the project programme • Defines the project programme • Oversees project development and monitors progress • Oversees the scientific aspects • Ensures external liaisons • Policy making level • Other communities (WP2-5) • Other VO projects (WP2-4) • Define the Medium term Euro-VO strategic plan Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  6. WP2-1 Definition and monitoring of project programme • Definition of the project programme, monitoring : Board, WPMT • Scientific oversight • High level guidance: EuroVO-SAC • Two meetings in 2008: 11-12 March (Cambridge UK), 11-12 December (Strasbourg) • Day-to-day science input: IST • Risk register, performance indicators are maintained Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  7. Transition from other projects • Close organisation of transition from Phase B projects (EuroVO-DCA, VO-TECH) to EuroVO-AIDA • Invitation of Board members, back-to-back Final DCA Board – EuroVO-AIDA WPMT • Technology Forums organised with VO-TECH • Products of Phase B projects are assets of EuroVO-AIDA e.g. EuroVO-DCA Census of data centres is used and will be maintained during Cycle 2 Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  8. WP2-1 External liaison and medium term strategy Liaison with the policy making level: The major event is the recognition of the VO as one of the components of the research infrastructure for astronomy – a major success for a young (~2000) concept • AstroNet ERA-NET: European strategy for Astronomy • Science Vision 2007 • Infrastructure Roadmap 2008 • Also presented in C. Cesarsky plenary talk on Global astronomy projects among 5 examples at the ECRI 2008 conference Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  13. Medium term strategy • Major project deliverables • D2.6 (May 2009): Report on the astronomical knowledge infrastructure disciplinary model • D2.10 (July 2010): Medium term strategic plan for Euro-VO • They will be build on EuroVO-DCA/VO-TECH reports and EuroVO-AIDA findings • EuroVO-AIDA global view of Euro-VO activities is fundamental for building the transition to operations and the long term vision Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  14. WP2-2 Workshops Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  15. WP2-2 Objectives and scheduling • WP2-2 Objectives • Dissemination of knowledge, gathering of feedback, sharing of best practice (astronomers, data providers) • Technology Forums as major JRA milestones • Important deliverables, milestones and project products (Web pages including presentations are sustainably available on line) • Several types of Workshops • Workshop schedule updated in the Preliminary Project Plan for practical reasons, to maximize impact Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  16. The three kinds of Euro-VO Workshops • Science Workshops (ESO) Multiwavelength astronomy, ESAC, 1-3 December 2008 (Hands-on workshop, ESO, 30 March – 2 April 2009) • Data Centre Workshop (ESA) 1 in 2009 at ESAC (2007, 2008 = DCA, ESA, ESO) • Technology Forums (UEDIN) – 2/year 2008 = with VO-TECH as foreseen to ensure transition • 17-20 March, Strasbourg • 29 September – 2 October, Cambridge VO-TECH > AIDA transition (16-18 March 2009, Strasbourg) Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  17. Workshop preparation and results • Science and Data Centre Workshops • Preparatory work for Science and Data Centre Workshops is done in Service Activities • Requirements and feedback from usage and implementation gathered by VO participants, feedback from participants at the end of the workshop • Input for tutorials, tools, standards (SA and JRA deliverables) • Technology Forums are the place for presentation/discussion of JRA results and collaborations (including informal ‘hack-a-thon’ sessions) and preparation of IVOA meetings Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  18. WP2-3 Community dissemination Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  19. WP2-3 Activities • Participation in conferences, schools e.g. European Astronomical Society yearly meetings • Related products: Web pages maintained within Service Activities, including tutorials • Updated taking into account Workshop findings • First formal release D4.2/D5.2 (April 2009) Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  20. WP2-4 International co-operation on the definition of IVOA standards Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  21. Relations with IVOA • WP2-4 is the Networking Activity linked to the technical activities • Very active participation in IVOA Working Groups (WP6-WP7-WP8) • IVOA Interoperability meetings are among the fundamental project milestones • Very active participation in the meetings • Keep track of talks presented by the partners: D2.4 First yearly report on participation to Interops (May 2009) Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  22. WP2-5 Liaison with other communities Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  23. WP2-5 objectives and targets • WP5-2 Objectives • Assess and prepare future collaborations with other disciplines and other communities • Input for medium-term strategic plan • Targets Planets, heliospheric physics, particle physics, atomic and molecular physics METAFOR, Earth Observation, Digital Libraries Several projects in negociation phase following 2008 Calls • IVOA ‘Liaison’ group Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

  24. ‘Concertation’ activities • Very active participation in EC-organised ‘Concertation’ meetings (Sophia-Antipolis), Barcelona, Lyon Interoperability standards (IVOA as a standardizing body) – Provenance (WP7) • OGF (Data workshop), OGF-Europe • ‘Community Best practice’ report for OGF Europe after Barcelona meeting – will be used in the ‘Disciplinary model’ deliverable • Invitation to RECURSE Curation Workshop (Edinburgh, 1 December 2008) Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator
