  1. Meeting 2/17/10 Mesoanalysis and SKEW-T’s SCSU Storm Chase Club

  2. Mesoanalysis • What is a mesoanalysis? • It is the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) in-house model that homes in on a certain geographic area for analysis of various severe weather parameters

  3. SKEW-T Soundings • What is a Skew-T? • It is the profile of a weather balloon as it moves through the atmosphere. It offers a picture of the atmosphere at a certain geographic point.

  4. Skew-T/Hodograph

  5. Skew-T

  6. What does this mean? • Temperature • Dewpoint • Theta Parcel of Air • Shear • Index’s • http://www.thewxpage.com/upperairtutorial.html

  7. Mesoanalysis • A 2D spatial version of a sounding, of sorts - Gives us an idea of what me happening in areas where soundings are not available Calculates many of the same values as a sounding would, however this should Not replace the sounding! http://www.spc.ncep.noaa.gov/exper/mesoanalysis/new/

  8. Where are SKEW-T’s available? SPC Website http://w1.spc.woc.noaa.gov/exper/soundings/ College of DuPage http://weather.cod.edu/analysis/analysis.sound.html Just because the SPC sounding looks fancier doesn’t always mean its better to look at! Sometimes keeping things simple (look at COD v.s SPC) is easier on the eyes

  9. Conclusions • SKEW-T’s give us the best look at whats going on in the atmosphere. You can physically see the CAP, CAPE and wind shear and index’s • Mesoanalysis helps us for areas in between launches both spatially and temporally. Mesoanalysis runs every hour, for a large area, whereas balloons launch every 12 hours for one point.
