  2. Mission Statement The Mills Park Middle School community will collaborate to produce a positive learning environment that will facilitate the development of our students into productive citizens of the 21st century.

  3. 6th Grade Schedule • 8:00-8:15 Locker/Warm up work • 8:15-9:20 Period (Core) 1 • 9:25-10:25 Period (Core) 2 • 10-30-11:30 Period (Core) 3 • 11:35-12:05 Lunch • 12:10-1:10 Period 5 - Core 4 • 1:15-2:05 Period 6 • 2:10-3:00 Period 7 Healthful Living Elective

  4. Core Courses • Language Arts • Math • Social Studies • Science

  5. Core Courses • Language Arts Emphasizes personal expression through short stories, drama, poetry, nonfiction, and independent reading. Reading and writing skills are further developed

  6. Core Courses • Math Math placement is determined by several factors: EOG scores, 5th grade performance, 5th grade teacher’s recommendation. 6th Grade Math Advanced Math Algebra 1 if applicable

  7. Core Courses • Social Studies Extending 4th/5th grade studies to embrace South America and Europe, (including Russia) Primary discipline is cultural geography Compares similarities & differences among societies

  8. Core Courses • Science Hands-on learning to demonstrate mastery of knowledge Earth and Environmentally based units provide rigorous scientific background for all students

  9. 4 Teams • Bobcats • Lions • Pumas • Tigers Core Courses are taken within student’s team

  10. Everyone takes • Healthful Living Health 2 weeks P.E. 2 weeks combination lock needed for P.E. locker

  11. Electives • Year-Long (36 weeks): Band (must join in 6th grade) • Half-year, or semester (18 weeks): Art Dance Exploring Career Decisions Keyboarding

  15. MPMS Special Education Department Serves students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through a variety of supports in accordance with IDEA, the federal law that governs special education services.

How can I expect Special Programs to change as we transition to middle school? • Small Group vs. Inclusion Model • 90% of students with IEPs are served through inclusion model • Related services (speech, occupational therapy) typically transition to a support description • Curriculum Assistance

  18. Transitioning . . . • Transition meeting prior to end of 5th grade year • Current elementary IEP team utilizes all information and data about your child’s needs to determine appropriate middle school placements
