  1. First Grade Open House Mrs. Bango 2011-2012

  2. All About Mrs. Bango • I have dual certification in regular and special education from the State University College at Buffalo. • I received my master’s degree from the State University at Albany. • I continue to study through reading professional books and journals and participate in many workshops and Staff Development classes. • This is my 24th year with North Colonie and my 18th year teaching 1st grade.

  3. FYI • We are a nut free classroom. This means students may not bring snacks or birthday treats that contain any type of nuts. • Lunch money –Please make checks out to North Colonie Cafeteria Fund. • We have sharing circle every Monday. Students are encouraged to share something they did over the weekend or they may bring a special item to share. • The Sharing Dog will come home with one student at a time. This started Tuesday and will continue throughout the year.

  4. Special Services • Remedial Reading --5 day and 3 day • K-2 Language and Speech • School Counselor • Learning Resource Area • Health Educator • Psychologist • Occupational/ Physical Therapist • English as a Second Language • Students need to qualify to receive services for many of the services listed.

  5. Homework • Look for a new homework sheet each Monday. • Please keep this sheet in the folder for the week. • I typically assign homework Monday through Thursday. • After the directions are read, the children should be able to independently complete the assigned work in 10 to 15 minutes. • Have your child read as much of the Morning Letter as he/she can each evening. • Reading and/or being read to should be part of the evening routine!

  6. Raising A Reader Balanced Literacy • First two pages in packet. • Important to let your child use the strategies he /she learns at school when reading at home. Encourage practice of strategies when reading together. (See pages 3 & 4 in packet.) • Bedtime reading is best as a read aloud. Reading together works well when your child is still energized. • Reading should be a pleasant experience. I have suggestions that could help. Please contact me if things are not going well.

  7. Writing • The students are offered choice in their writing most of the time. • Sound spelling is encouraged. • We have Writing Workshop 3 to 4 times a week. • Students write in their journals during Writing Center. • Try keeping a journal at home! Look on page 5 for ideas!

  8. Math • Page 7 has our math objectives for the year. • Math lessons are done with the whole group. I use manipulatives for many math lessons. If we complete a math page I will correct it and send it home for you to look over. • Often the math homework has a required page and an optional page. The optional page will be marked and is typically enrichment work.

  9. Spelling (Will now be called Word Work or Word Study!) • 2 core words (high frequency words) • 3 word family words/vowel sound focus/spelling patterns • 2 choice words (selected from student’s writing or word bank) • Parents will receive a word study dictation highlighted or circled with words your child has not yet mastered. These words will placed in the student’s word bank. No grade will be given! • Word Study curriculum aligns directly with our writing program. Spelling is no longer a separate entity. • There will not be any specific spelling homework. Refer to suggested at home activities in Open House packet.

  10. Spelling… Continued • Research demonstrates the traditional method of drill and practice which emphasizes memorization is not the most effective way to teach students spelling. Our focus is on building an understanding of effective spelling strategies and patterns. • Our goal is for students to apply these skills and strategies to their daily writing. • You will be given the core words for the week and the word family for the week communicated through weekly homework sheet. Please practice core words and create your own words from the word family at home. • Thank you for your help in assisting your child in developing his or her understanding of spelling.

  11. Social Studies & Science • The units we complete throughout the year are listed on page 8. • There will be many hands-on activities in science. • In November and December we have a fun social studies unit on holidays and traditions. You will be invited to share!

  12. Report Card • The report card is a work in progress. • This is our first year of completing 3 report cards instead of 4. We will continue to send progress reports. • The section on reading explains your child’s reading progress. Please look for a paper in the first report card to explain reading progress. It is important to keep this paper as a reference for the entire school year.

  13. Parent-Teacher Conferences • Please do not forget to sign up for a conference on one of clipboards on the back table! • Please sign up for volunteer times if you are available! • Mystery Reader is a first grader favorite!
