  3. No Child Left Behind- Your Teachers are… • Highly Qualified • MA in Education • GATE certified • CLAD certified • Master Teacher

  4. Classroom Management • Students will receive two type of tickets. HEART coin tickets are rewards and incentives for positive choices. Can be used for classroom store, homework passes for daily assignments (not major projects), and Shop Till You Drop • CLASS tickets are classroom currency • One party a month for that month’s birthdays. Room parent will coordinate this with families. • Consequences • Verbal warning • Sign in to behavior log and lose a ticket • Loss of recess and Rethinking letter • Meeting with parents and student • Meeting with student, parents and administrator

Classroom volunteers! • We need volunteers in all areas. • Working with students • Copying papers, filing, organizing • Grading • Room parent or Room parent committee • Holiday parties • School events and end of year events Megan’s Law forms are required for ALL school volunteers. They are available in the office

  6. Homework Policy • Daily Homework Agenda – students must get it initialed daily. Assignments are on the board and on the website. • Math homework assigned Monday through Thursday. • Spelling and vocabulary is assigned Wednesday to Wednesday, giving the weekend to study if needed. Tests are on WEDNESDAYS. • Late work must be turned in by Friday or it will not be accepted. • Absent work has until the following Friday. Look in the absent folder for assignments. Extenuating circumstances can be discussed with the teacher.

Language Arts Curriculum • Reading • Standards based • Involves multiple avenues for acquisition of knowledge – modeling active reading, interactive reading, reading response journals • Written assessments –developing critical thinking skills and expressive writing • Vocabulary – root words, derived meanings from Greek and Latin to find the meaning of unknown words • Writing • Standards based writing that integrates language arts standards with writing and district writing prompts • Research reports • Grammar and writing conventions – all written work • Spelling – all written work and assessments

  8. Math Curriculum • Houghton Mifflin Math – NEW! • It is a challenge – be patient! It is about going through the (sometimes painful) process of solving a problem • Look on Mrs. Hankins’ website for links to examples and resources. • Hopefully coming soon – teacher modeled lesson recorded and posted!

  9. How to help in math - • Practice math facts – games, online, 60 Second Sweep, etc. • Check over math homework daily for calculation errors • Help student keep homework page organized and neat • Check math tests and error analysis • Have student come in for help when needed • Tuesday/Thursday mornings at 8:00 for tutoring help. Bring your questions with you!

Science – Tested Skills in 5th • Physical Science *matter *Periodic table *mixtures, compounds, and chemical reactions • Life Science – Tree of Life (classifications) *Cells *Plant structure and functions *Body systems • Earth Science *Hydrosphere – water cycle, where water comes from *Atmosphere – severe weather, climate, forecasting *Solar system

Arts Instruction • Integrated throughout curricular areas • Arts rotation • Pottery – Mrs. Eskridge • Visual Arts – Mrs. Venegas • Technology – Mrs. Hankins • Dance – Mrs. Jennings • Drama – Mrs. Sheridan • Music – Band pull out on Monday and Friday. More information from Mr. Mello to follow. *band pull out - optional

  12. Field Trips • Pathfinder Ranch • October 11,12, and 13 • Information booth is in the quad • This is NOT mandatory. Students who choose not to attend will still come to school • Riley’s Farm – Revolutionary War Experience • June 2nd • All who wish to chaperone may do so but must pay their own entrance fee and provide transportation

  13. Adopt a Classroom • Due to state budget constraints, classroom fund are very limited. Please consider adopting our classroom to help with arts materials, P.E. equipment, etc. • Pooling funds with other families makes the $250 cost for adopting a classroom much more reasonable
