Warm-Up • Compromise • El Paso • Texas • Border • Free states • Runaway Slaves • More punishment • New Mexico • 1850 • New Mexico • Slave states Problem Solving: Using the words on the left, create 3 sentences in your spiral. You do not have to use each word and you are not trying to create a story. Do your best! • Does human interaction always lead to conflict?

  6. Sectionalism Because of an idea called “Sectionalism” many problems arose between the North and the South. Using the illustration – what do think the meaning of “sectionalism” means? he placing of the needs of one section of the nation over the needs of the whole nation.

  8. One of the biggest issue was the “Disputed Northern Border” between Texas and New Mexico. Another issue was the fact that there were many run away slaves escaping all the time.

  9. Free States Undetermined Slave States Another issue was the fact that there the North wanted no more slave states while the South wanted more slave states

Problem-Solving Activity • To solve problems created by SECTIONALISM, the leaders had to find a compromise! • Using the problem solving worksheet to pick 2 of the 3 problems to solve. • Provide at least 1 solution for each of the problems (you can do more). • Identify how the solution is both positive and negative.

Compromise of 1850 Reading • Read the section titled Compromise of 1850 on pg. 279 in your textbook. • Find out what the leaders of the country did to come to a compromise. • Write at least 6 terms of the Compromise of 1850 in the circles of the bubble map • Answer the 4 questions at the bottom
