  1. Mr. Gifford’s 5th Grade Math Lesson #13Adding using the partial sum/place value method.

  2. When adding and subtracting there are two main methods to find the answer. In the next two lessons I will show you both.This lesson will show you how to use your place value as the partial sum method.

  3. Place value/partial sum method means to add digits by their place value by way of the Distributive Property. 539 +289 500 + 30 + 9 + 200 + 80 + 9 700 + 110 + 18 820

  4. You can only use this method with Addition. Not with SUBTRACTION! At first you will have to show your work. As you get more practice you will be able to add these numbers in your head…MENTAL MATH!!!

  5. Let’s Look at another one 3,821 + 6,497 3,000 + 800 + 20 + 1 +6,000 + 400 + 90 + 7 18,000 + 1,200 + 110 + 8 19,318

  6. You can do the same with decimals. Nothing changes. 73.02 + 35.92 70 + 3 + .0 + .02 + 30 + 5 + .9 + .02 100 + 8 + .9 + .04 108.94

  7. Now it is your turn. Use the place value/partial sum method to answer these questions. 5,038 + 6,918 5,000 + 000 + 30 + 8 + 6,000 + 900 + 10 + 8 11,000 + 900 + 40 + 16 11,956

  8. Here is another. 39.248 + 42.915 30 + 9 + .2 + .04 + .008 + 40 + 2 + .9 + .01 + .005 70 + 11 + 1.1 + .05 + .013 82.163

  9. Good work today. Remember every problem you work on you need to estimate so see what your answer will be. Then use the partial sum/place value method to find your final answer.
