  1. Measurement Measuring Temperature SMI4P1

  2. Essential Questions • What unit is used to describe the temperature of air or a liquid? • What happens to the temperature when you mix equal amounts of hot and cold water? SMI4P1

  3. Vocabulary • temperature – a measure of how hot or cold something is • degrees Celsius – the metric unit of temperature. Water freezes at 0 ℃and boils at 100 ℃. • thermometer – a tool used to measure temperature SMI4P1

  4. Measuring temperature • What do you think when you hear the word hot? • What comes to mind when you hear the word cold? • Where in the world is it hot? cold? • How can you tell when something is hot? SMI4P1

  5. Introducing “Temperature” • The amount of heat in an object is its temperature. • Temperature is how hot or cold something is. SMI4P1

  6. The Task • Each group will get three cups of water. • The cups have been filled with water of different temperatures. • You will work with your group to put the cups in order from warmest to coldest. SMI4P1

  7. The Procedure • Each person will have a turn. • Each person will use one finger on his right hand. • The finger will be put into the water in each cup only once – no going back. • When everyone has had a turn, put the cups in order warmest to coldest. • Each person can use one finger on their left hand to go back and double check. SMI4P1

  8. Discuss the results. • Group Warmest to coldest SMI4P1

  9. Introduce the Thermometer • Fingers are not very useful tools for measuring temperature. They are a non-standard measurement tool. • A better tool for measuring temperature is a thermometer, and the standard unit in the metric system is the degree Celsius. SMI4P1

  10. Mix Hot and Cold • Review the temperatures of the hot and cold water. • Guess what the temperature will be if you mix equal volumes of hot and cold water in another cup. SMI4P1

  11. Vocabulary Review • temperature – a measure of how hot or cold something is • degrees Celsius – the metric unit of temperature. Water freezes at 0 ℃and boils at 100 ℃. • thermometer – a tool used to measure temperature SMI4P1

  12. Essential Questions • What unit is used to describe the temperature of air or a liquid? • Degrees Celsius • What happens to the temperature when you mix equal amounts of hot and cold water? • The temperature is between that of the hot and cold water temperatures. SMI4P1

  13. Content/Inquiry Entries • What is the name of the tool that is used to measure temperature? • Thermometer • What units are used in the metric system to report temperature? • Degrees Celsius SMI4P1
