2. Western SSA Is the largest of the ten Government school sports associations in NSW in terms of geography but the smallest in terms of enrolments. Boundries: Lithgow – Gilgandra – Broken Hill – Wentworth -West Wyalong - Oberon.

3. Primary Eligibility The Primary Representative School Sport Program caters for boys and girls from the age of 8 years to 13 years 5 months in the year of competition, enrolled in Primary Schools affiliated to the New South Wales Primary Schools Sports Association.

10. Secondary Eligibility The Secondary Representative School Sport Program caters for boys and girls from the age of 12 years to 19 years in the year of competition, enrolled in Government Secondary or Central Schools affiliated to the New South Wales Combined High Schools Sports Association.

Role of the Western Sports Organiser In brief, to coordinate the Representative School Sports Program and School Swimming Scheme (K-2) for Government schools (primary, secondary and central) within the Western Region. Duties include: • Administering the office of the Western School Sports Association • Setting State (with other RSO’s) and Regional Sports calendars • Managing budgets for relief ($92,500), School Swimming Scheme ($80000), state carnivals hosted by Western SSA, 45 teams representing WSSA at state carnivals • WSSA apparel • Coordination of 45 teams (1300 representatives, 50 teachers annually) to state carnivals • Hosting up to 5 state carnivals on behalf of NSWPSSA or CHS annually. • Representing the WSSA at NSWPSSA and NSWCHS Council meetings • Sports consultancy • Liaison with other Government agencies and Community sporting bodies

34. Are students covered for medical expenses and ambulance if they get injured playing sport? Parents should note that children participate in the school sport program ‘at their own risk’.This includes PE lessons, school sport and representative sport.

35. I have a student who wants to participate in a state sport not offered by Western. How can they do this? Arrangements can be made to attend trials at a neighbouring region such as North West, Hunter or Riverina. Alternatively, some sports have Conveners teams.

36. We don’t have accredited coaches for our school teams on staff. Can we use non-teachers as coaches? Non teacher coaches may beused for school or Regional teamsproviding: • The person has appropriate accreditation • The principal acknowledges the person as the school coach • Appropriate screening and declaration forms completed. • A teacher accompanies the team and is responsible for management of the team (and Duty of Care). The non teacher would have the same cover by the DET as a teacher!

37. Can an 8 year old student in year two participate in the Representative School Sport Program? Yes But only in the sports of swimming and athletics. There are designated events for 8 year olds in each sport. It should be noted that it is a school decision to allow such students the opportunity of competing!

38. When I tried to book a venue, I was asked to provide a copy of the school’s Public Liability Insurance. What do I do? Recommendation is to provide the following wording on school letterhead: “In support of the application from (name of convener) for the (name of trial), the New South Wales Department of Education and Training is a Self Insurer and is prepared to give indemnity under the following terms: • The Education Department and its teachers owe a duty of care to all students in its charge to protect them against the risk of injury that is foreseeable. • That duty of care is owed whenever student/teacher relationships exist and likewise when supervision is provided. The Department of Education and Training will indemnify the (name of council) in respect of any personal injury to any student caused by the negligence of the Department of Education and Training or its servants arising out of its use of your property.
