Started in 1993 • Funded through tonnage fees applied to pesticides and fertilizers sold in Michigan. • Program objective is to educate the public on the importance of groundwater protection • Teach individuals what they can do at their own homes to reduce the risk of groundwater contamination
Site Assessment Why Is It Important?
Watershed Land area that contributes water to a specific surface water body, such as a pond, lake, wetland, river or bay
What Affects Water Quality? • Risks to groundwater and surface water • Soil type • Soil depth • Bedrock depth • Water table depth
Soil, Bedrock and Water Table • Permeability (penetrable) • Soil Type (based on particle size) • Soil Depth • Bedrock • Water Table (boundary between saturated and unsaturated soil)
