Communication: Interpersonal vs. Impersonal Characteristics of interpersonal relationships Uniqueness-each relationship has its own set of rules Impersonal are more formal, tend to use labels Irreplaceability-impersonal relationships are exchangeable Interdependence-what happens to one effects the other person Impersonal-doesn’t matter as much what happens to them Disclosure-the closer you are, the more you share Intrinsic rewards-the relationship is the reward Impersonal tends to meet a different need Scarcity-truly interpersonal relationships are not the majority of the interactions we have
