Background • Conducted spring 2007 • 80-item survey designed to collect opinions on seven key areas: • CCS District Environment • SCC Campus Environment • Communications • Planning and Decision-Making • Resources and Facilities • Work Environment • Equity and Diversity • A similar survey was conducted in 2003. 16 items from that survey were included in 2007 to allow direct comparison. • Presentation includes only key findings. • Full report will be made available soon. Who Responded • All SCC faculty, staff, and exempt employees were invited to participate. • Out of 570 SCC employees, 254 responded (45%). • In 2003, 57% responded. • Employee classifications used in analysis: • Faculty includes full-time and part-time. • Staff includes classified and hourly staff, full-time and part-time (excludes student work-study). • Exempt includes professional and administrative exempt. Section 1 – CCS District Environment • Organizational adaptability: • Only half of SCC employees believe CCS is innovative and that CCS administration is open to change. • Working relationships: • Only one-third of SCC employees believe SCC has good relationship with SFCC and IEL faculty and staff.* • Only two out of five SCC employees believe SCC staff has a good relationship with CCS staff.* • Employee comments about district environment • The most common responses regard complaints about too much paperwork and too many regulations. • The next most common responses regard a lack of connection between district and SCC. • (only about 17%-just over 1 out of 6- answered these questions) SCC Office of Institutional Research

Section 2 – SCC Campus Environment • Overall ratings of SCC as a place to work are highly positive. • 70% recommend family and friends work here and over 85% recommend taking classes here. • Organizational adaptability: Over 60% of employees view SCC as innovative and see administrators as open to change* • Working relationships among faculty, staff, and administration: Overall positive** • Employee comments about campus environment • The most common concerns were regarding parking lot and campus security before and after hours. Section 3 – Communications • Internal Information flow • Only half feel well informed about SCC • Two-thirds feel well informed about their division • Three-quarters feel well informed about dept. * • Only 40% feel well informed about budget allocations. • Opportunities for input • Only half feel that SCC provides environment conducive to open discussion and that they are provided with opportunities to communicate with administration. • Communications with the public • While over half believe SCC has a good public image, only one-third feel the community is well informed about what SCC has to offer them. • Employee comments about communications • Most comments regarding SCC’s communication with the public were positive. • Most comments regarding SCC’s internal communication were negative. Section 4 – Planning and Decision-making • Vision and Mission • Two-thirds understand the SCC mission and strategic goals • 42% of faculty and 54% of staff say they understand SCC’s vision for the future, compared to 73% of exempt. • Growth Two-thirds agree that SCC can excel in fulfilling its mission and can continue on a path of growth. • The Planning Process • Only one in five agree that resources are adequate to ensure effective evaluation and planning. • Only 30% feel that budget decisions reflect participation of all parties. • Less than half of faculty and staff feel their input has contributed to dept planning and policy-making, and less than one-quarter feel they contributed to campus level planning and policy-making. • Employee comments about planning and decision making • Issues regarding budgeting were the most common theme. Section 5 – Resources and Facilities • About three-quarters feel they are provided with sufficient physical space, equipment, and supplies needed to perform their job. • Only about 40% feel SCC provides resources necessary for maintaining and upgrading physical space when needed. • Less than one-third of faculty and staff feel there is clear, well-known, systematic planning used to provide for facilities and equipment needs, compared to a majority of exempt. • Less than one-third of faculty and staff, and only half of exempt, feel that parking is adequate. • Employee responses about resources and facilities: • The most common comments were regarding a lack of physical space in classrooms or offices. • Inadequate parking for students was mentioned several times as well. Section 6 – Work Environment • The vast majority (over 70%) feel that: • their work contributes to the mission of the div/dept, • individual initiative and teamwork are encouraged, • interpersonal relationships are courteous and professional. • About half feel that: • there have been positive changes in their work environment in recent years, • morale is high in their work area, • staffing levels are adequate *, • are satisfied with support for professional development**. • Employee responses about work environment • The most common responses regarded a desire for more professional development (nearly 1/3 of responders to this question). Section 7 – Equity and Diversity • The vast majority (over 80%) feel that: • Staff in their work area and students are treated equally. • They are comfortable working with people from different ethnic backgrounds • Their work area is not only free from harassment toward employees from under-represented groups, but is also welcoming of these employees. • Less than half feel that faculty and staff are sufficiently diverse. • Employee responses about equity and diversity: • Several responses regard an observation of more diversity on campus than in the community. • Several responses regard an observation of a lack of diversity at SCC.
