Honors Math; Are you Ready? • Test will help us know • Partner Schools ALL students will take at school first week of June • Private Schools ALL students can take at district • (make up) contact X1171 • Completed course work • Teacher recommendation for “bubble scores” • CST scores (4 or 5 ok; 3 or less not ok)

  3. Why test everyone? • Common assessment gives common information. • Find the students who are apparently ready and encourage them to go for it. • Placement • Algebra I , Geometry or Honors Geometry

  4. What if you do not make the cutoff or you received a “bubble” score? • Take Algebra I in summer school. • “A” qualifies for Honors Geometry • Independent review with a tutor • Take Algebra I in High School • Foundation for a successful mathematics career. (no rush) • Success of sophomores • Re-enter honors program any year

  6. Is Honors Math for you? • Do you like math? • Is math your strength? • Goal is Calculus and/or AP Prob Stats

  7. How is Honors Geometry different from CP? • Cover more curriculum. • Prep for Calculus • Cover at a deeper level. • More development of concepts • Students develop independent and critical thinking skills • (less spoon feeding)

  8. What do you need to do? • Learn as much Algebra as you can now! • Possibly review this summer • PARTNER SCHOOLS: • Take the test at school • Turn in a letter of Intent by April 29th with report card • Decline placement to honors after receiving letter of acceptance if you DON’T want it • PRIVATE SCHOOLS: • Take the test at the district if you haven’t already • Turn in letter of Intent when you enroll

  9. Why Take Honors Biology? Is your child: • highly motivated to learn? • able to grasp scientific concepts easily? • a high test achiever (exams every 2-3 weeks and are 65% of the course)? • able to conduct independent work? • able to do assignments on time? • prepared for large homework loads (multiple honors classes)? • good at time management? ex extracurricular activities • responsible? Does your child: • have a strong interest in the sciences? • plans to take AP Biology (College level course, 2nd year of Biology at the 10th or 11th grade)?

Honors Biology Ideal Candidate: • “A” or “B” in all 8th grade classes. • Earn grades of “A’s” in Science during the 8th grade year • Earn grades of “A” or “B” in Algebra during the 8th grade year • CST Science Scores: Advanced score • Has a good attendance record THOSE MEETING THE ABOVE CONDITIONS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY

  11. How is Honors Biology different from College Prep Biology? Honors Biology: • Covers additional curriculum. -Modified AP Bio labs, Biotechnology Unit, In depth dissection, etc. • Covers concepts at a deeper level. -More development of concepts • Moves at a faster pace. -Exams are usually every 2-3 weeks • Allows students to develop Scientific, independent, and critical thinking skills. • Provides the foundation for Advanced Placement (AP) Biology.

  13. Honors Bio FAQ’s • Is there an entrance exam? NO • If my child has taken Algebra, but does not meet baseline scores for Honors Geo. entrance, can s/he still take Honors Bio? YES • Does my child have to be concurrently enrolled in Honors Geometry or Honors English/Ancient Civ. or AP Human Geography? NO • Is there a summer assignment? YES -Instructions will be on my teacher website by July 1st
