Standard Diploma Graduation Options • A four-year, minimum of 24-credits standard program, or • A three-year, 18 credit standard college preparatory program, or • A three-year, 18 credit career preparatory program Standard 24 Credit Graduation Requirements • English – 4 credits • Math – 4 credits (to include Algebra I and Geometry) • Science – 3 credits (to include Biology) • Social Studies – 3 credits ( World History, US History, Economics and US Government) • Health Opportunities in Physical Education (HOPE)– 1 credit • Fine Art or DOE Approved Practical Art – 1 credit • Electives – as needed for a total of 24 credits (8 credits) • Earn a 2.0 GPA • Pass Grade 10 FCAT II Reading (cut scores to be determined) • Pass Algebra I End of Course Exam (EOC) • Take Geometry and Biology End of Course Exam (EOC) which will equal 30% of final grade • Pass at least one online high school course (half or whole credit) offered by Leon County Virtual School or FL Virtual School. The course must meet the 24 credits required for graduation. Online high school courses taken in middle school will meet this requirement.

Final grade and credit earned on an annual basis. All other courses-Two grading periods per semester. Final grade and credit earned on a semester basis. The semester exam counts for 20% of the semester grade. *Per grading period – you must earn a passing grade during the final grading period and/or exam to earn credit for the semester. Grade Point Average • Students will have an official transcript with unweighted and weighted GPA after the completion of one semester of a high school coursework. • UnweightedGPA is based on all courses awarded the standard grading of: A = 4.0 C = 2.0 B = 3.0 D = 1.0 • Weighted GPAis based on: Honors and honors gifted courses are awarded an extra .5 for a semester grade of a C or better. A = 4.5 Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses are awarded an extra 1.0 for a semester grade of C or higher. A = 5.0 Many different GPAs: • 9 weeks GPA • Semester GPA • Cumulative GPA – weighted and unweighted • Cumulative unweighted GPA ( use for promotion and graduation) • Cumulative weighted GPA (used for class rank and academic awards) • 2.0 unweighted GPA is required to participate in extracurricular activities • Chiles High School GPA is different than GPAs computed by Bright Futures, colleges/universities and NCAA .

State of Florida University System Minimum standards 3.0 recalculated academic GPA, plus SAT or ACT OR 2.5 – 2.99 recalculated academic GPA, plus at least a minimum score in all three sections of the SAT or ACT as outlined below: SAT – Critical Reading >= 460 or ACT – Reading >= 19, SAT – Math >= 460 or ACT Math >= 19, and SAT – Writing >= 440 or ACT English/Writing >= 18. ALL students must complete the secondary academic unit requirements: • 4 units of English • 4 units of mathematics at the Algebra I level and higher. Liberal Arts, Integrated Math and Informal Geometry are not counted. Algebra IA & IB = 1 unit together • 3 units of science • 3 units of social science • 2 sequential units of the same foreign language • 2 elective units, preferably English, math, science, social science, or foreign language State universities use the same method as Leon County Schools for weighting academic courses earning a “C” or better : awarding an extra .5 for honors and 1.0 for AP and dual enrollment .

Exam Exemptions Student must meet the following requirements during the semester: • “A” in both nine weeks grading period. • No referral resulting in ISS or OSS. • No Class II or higher referral resulting in Saturday School. • Satisfactory citizenship in all classes. • Has parent permission to exempt exam(s). • Exemptions for non-academic elective courses– Students may exempt elective course exams both semesters. • Courses requiring an End of Course Exam (EOC) –Student is required to take a mid-term and final exam. • Exemptions for academic courses that do not re quire an EOC- Students may exempt one semester exam if they meet the exemption requirements. They are required to take at least one semester exam in each academic subject area with the school year(either the 1st semester or 2nd semester exam).Academic courses include English, math, science, social studies and foreign language 1st semester exams will be administered December 19 - 21. These are full school days with a regular bus schedule.

Promotion to 10th grade • 5 credits • 1.0 unweighted GPA • Standardized tests are used for academic placement (FCAT) • Students who fail a course need to meet with their guidance counselor to discuss retake options. Options include: • Leon County Schools Adult and Community Education (ACE) • Leon County Virtual School – not available in the summer • Florida Virtual School • Private Schools – summer only *All of these options require approval from your student’s guidance counselor.

Community College • Admission based on Regular high school diploma • Florida community colleges recommend that students take the same core high school courses that are required for state university admission • Students who take college prep courses in high school are more likely to be successful. • A student with an AA degree is guaranteed admission to a state university (not necessarily university or program of your choice), acceptance of 60 credit hours towards BA/BS degree and junior standing. • Everyone must take a placement test. The FPERT will be used unless exempted by SAT or ACT scores. It is generally recommended for students to take the SAT and/or ACT in the spring of their junior year. SAT: 440 verbal and 550 math ACT: 17 English, 18 reading, 21 math

  22. NCAA Requirements • Required for any student athlete who wants to play at a Division I or II college • Clearinghouse form should be sent at end of junior year. Community Service Guidelines Community service activities should directly address identified social problems in the school or community in areas such as health, education, environment, or public safety. Community service activities may be performed at school or in the community. Activities should serve the “greater good.” Community service activities must be unpaid. Community service activities must be rendered for not-for-profit organizations or agencies. After identifying a social problem in the school or community, the student should be engaged in meaningful action for a sustained amount of time so that their activities can have a positive impact.

  27. ePEP- Personal Education Planner • Florida has a one-stop student advising website at www.FACTS.org. There’s a special section just for high school students. • Freshmen are required to update their ePEP each year. • Students can: • See what options they have for courses during each year of high school. • See their high school transcript and find out whether they are taking the right courses to graduate. • Take a Career Interest Inventory called CHOICES. • Check out different careers and see what kind of education or training is required. • See what courses will make them eligible to go to college or to qualify for a Bright Futures scholarship to help pay for college. • Plan courses for each year of high school, so they can help lead them to where they want to go.

Statewide Testing Program Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) · Measures student achievement of New Generation Sunshine State Standards · Focus on Reading · High-level Standards Graduation Requirement – Grade 10 FCAT II Reading - cut scores to be determined. Graduation Requirement – Algebra I EOC – Must pass to earn credit in the course. - Geometry and Biology EOC - 30% of final grade. • At Chiles, we use scores for placement purposes. We offer remediation in reading and math for students with low test scores.

  30. Action Plan For Freshmen: • Set academic and personal goals to accomplish this year and begin to formulate a plan for 10th grade. Plan to take a strong curriculum but maintain a balance. • Get involved in activities at school and in the community. Keep a folder with activities, awards, etc. • Perform community service and volunteer ism. Maintain records of service. Forms and Guidelines for Bright Futures are available on Chiles website. A number of underclassmen opportunities are available in the guidance office. Often Essay contests, poster contests, etc. List is available on our web site. • Take a career inventory to help identify strengths and weaknesses and to research possible majors and careers in these areas. Recommend FACTS.org Choices Planner and CollegeBoard'sMyRoad programs at www.apps.collegeboard.com/myroad. • Take the PSAT as a 10th grader and as an 11th grader for last SAT preparation and National Merit Scholarship Program consideration. • FCAT for graduation in spring of sophomore year. • SAT/ACT in spring of junior year.
