de Dreu MJ, van der Wilk AS, Poppe E, Kwakkel G, van Wegen EE.(2012) Rehabilitation, exercise therapy and music in patients with Parkinson's disease: a meta-analysis of the effects of music-based movement therapy on walking ability, balance and quality of life. Parkinsonism & Related Disorders. Volume 18, Supplement 1, Pages S114-S119, January 2012.

  • [Improvements] were found for the Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go test and stride length (SESs: 4.1,2.2,0.11; P-values <0.01; I(2) 0,0,7%, respectively).

  • Significant improvement in walking velocity for gait-related Music-Based Music-therapy,

Neurological music therapy
Neurological Music Therapy

  • Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) is a method that enables the therapist to find the exact rhythm that supports optimum gait. RAS may positively influence initiating movements, rhythm and symmetry, freezing , coordination and endurance

  • Patterned Sensory Enhancement (PSE) uses music to enhance complex movements requiring coordination. PSE tailors the music movement to the motor movement, making it more efficient and fluid

  • Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP) uses “playing of music instruments to exercise and stimulate functional movement patterns in motor therapy.”
