  1. ”I am always doing things I can't do, that's how I get to do them.” -- Picasso.

  2. In order to understand and appreciate art, you must understand it’s language So, if Art is a language, what is its grammar or structure? We’ll find the answer in the Elements and Principles of Design

  3. The Elements of Design are: Line Shape Form Space Value Texture Color These are considered to be the “grammar” of art

  4. The Principles of Design are: Unity Balance Emphasis Pattern Visual Movement Rhythm These are like the “rules of grammar”; they form the guidelines that artists follow when they combine the various elements of design

  5. Lets Begin!

  6. Line Everywhere you look, you see lines In nature you can see lines in tree branches: In a curving river: Or in a spiders web

  7. The manufactured world provides examples too Lines can be formed by wires Edges of buildings And winding roads

  8. Contour lines vs. Gestural lines Contour means "outline", and presents exterior edges of objects. A Gesture drawing is work of art created with rapid movement.

  9. Blind Contour

  10. Contour drawing of your shoe

  11. What types of lines can we create?

  12. How do Lines Communicate a message or emotion ?

  13. Lines communicate with the viewer. In artworks, straight linesgenerally suggest directness or clarity while curving linesimply gentleness or movement. Diagonal linesconvey action and energy—think of a lightening bolt or a falling tree. Vertical linescan give an artwork strength while horizontal linesconvey calmness and tranquility. Repeated linescan create patterns, textures and even rhythms. Very thick linesappear strong while a thin lineappears weak or delicate. Fuzzy linesimply softness while smooth linesimply harder surfaces.

  14. Lines can also be implied or real. A real line is one you can actually see (Ex. A) while an implied line is the suggestion of a line (Ex. B) An implied line may also be suggested by a string of objects (Ex. C) (A) (B) (C)

  15. Close your eyes, listen to the music and imagine what kinds of lines are being created by the rhythm of the music.
