  1. Do Now Guess the probability of the following events. What is the probability that you will study for the STATS test? What is the probability that you pass the stats test GIVEN you did not study? What is the probability that you will pass the test GIVEN you studied?

  3. Calculate Conditional Probability Unit 4: Probability

  4. Objective • SWBAT Calculate the conditional probability of an event using the Conditional Probability Formula • Essential Understanding: Statistics can be used to empower people seeking political change.l • Standard for Mathematical Practice: Use appropriate tools strategically.

  6. Calculating Conditional Probability

  7. Andrea is a very good student. The probability that she studies and passes her mathematics test is 17/20. If the probability that Andrea studies is 15/16 , find the probability that Andrea passes her mathematics test, given that she has studied.

  8. The probability that Janice smokes is 3/10. The probability that she Smokes and develops lung cancer is 4/15. Find the probability that Janice develops lung cancer, given that she smokes.

  9. Exit Ticket The achievement gap in our country refers to students from low-income families not receiving the education they need to break the cycle of poverty. The probability of being considered low-income in the United States is 70%. The probability of graduating college is 33%. The probability of being a low-income student and graduating college is 5.6%. 2. Calculate the probability that you graduate college OR are low-income. 1. Calculate the probability of graduating college GIVEN you are a low income student. 3. Using ONE of the statistics you were given or calculated, identify one lurking variable that causes low-income students to have low graduation rates. How does that lurking variable relate to low-income and how does it impact student success?
