  3. What is Twitter? • Twitter is an information network • Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages • Twitter is about interaction

  4. What is Twitter Quite simply Twitter is similar to text messaging except the whole world. (or at least those on Twitter) can see it.

  5. Logging in to Twitter • Twitter can be accessed online via an internet computer at www.twitter.com • Apps are now available for phones and tablets to access Twitter on the move • To use Twitter you must have a USERNAME and password. • To get a username, register via www.twitter.com

  6. Sign in here if already registered using USERNAME and password Sign up here, choosing a username by which you can be identified. Twitter will advise if name already in use.

  7. usernames • Your username is what people will refer to (eg@dnsdirect) • It can be your real name or a derivation thereof • It can be something abstract or humorous • It can be changed at anytime in settings

  8. Your Twitter Profile • When registering you will be asked to complete a profile. It can be amended at anytime . • You should include • Picture (Avatar) • Name • Location • Website • Bio (short description of you/your business) • You can view other users profiles by clicking on their @USERNAME

  9. Amending your Profile Once logged into your Twitter account visit twitter.com/settings/profile Anytime to amend any of the details therein. You can also amend the design of your twitter page in the settings menu. Upload your logo to be displayed as your Twitter background or choose a pre-set theme.

  10. Tweets • At the heart of Twitter are small bursts of information called Tweets. • Tweets can be about anything you want. • They must be 140 characters or less. • Can include a link to a webpage • Can include a photo Tweet Tweet

  11. Composing a Tweet Click on compose tweet icon This box will appear. Simply type what you want to say in the space provided Insert a web page by copy and pasting the URL you want to share. When finished hit that TWEET button. Your tweet will now appear in your timeline for all your followers (and visitors to your timeline) to see Add a photo by clicking this icon, and searching on you computer for relevant image

  12. Followers • People who follow you and your timeline are your followers • You can follow people but they don’t have to follow you back (and vice versa) • Tweets from those you are following appear in your timeline • Your tweets appear in the timeline of those following you

  13. Following and Followers As you can see from this picture I am following 1980 people and 1432 follow me.

  14. Retweets • If someone likes your tweet they may “retweet” it. • If you like someone’s tweet or agree with what they say (or not) and want to share it with your followers, you can “retweet” theirs • To retweet simply click on the RETWEET button

Retweetscntd • There are different styles of retweets depending on the platform used. • On twitter.com, the original tweet is displayed with “retweeted by ....” underneath • Often a tweet will begin with “RT” signifying that it is a retweet. Eg RT @dnsdirect..... • Sometimes speech marks surround the original tweet appearing on the re-tweeters timeline. • MT stands for Modified Tweet, meaning that the original tweet has been changed before being retweeted.

  16. Replies • You can reply to any tweet by using the reply button • Clicking on the reply button will automatically open up a new tweet box, with the username of the person you are replying to already there. • You can now type your tweet and it will appear in their timeline and mentions column

  17. @ Mentions • To send a tweet directly to a user, put their @username at the beginning of your text. Only users who follow both accounts will see the tweet • If the @username is placed anywhere but at the beginning of the tweet, all your followers will see the tweet. • Your “mentions” can be viewed under the @Connect tab

  18. Interactions • Interactions can be found by clicking on @Connect • This view shows all your mentions, retweets and new followers

  19. Direct Messages (DMs) If you do not want any followers to see your tweet to another user you can send them a Direct Message (DM) Click on New Message and using the @Username of the tweeter you are messaging, type as if it were a normal tweet. They will see this in their Direct Message area not in their usual timeline

  20. #hashtags • Hashtags can be added to tweets to signify that your tweet is part of a bigger topic/discussion. • Clicking on a hashtag in a tweet will pull up all tweets including that hashtag • You can make up your own hashtags • Famous examples include #sbs

  21. Searching Twitter • In the top right hand corner of twitter.com there is a search box. • You can use this box to search for users, specific words or phrases in tweets.

  22. Lists • You can create lists and add users to specific lists • By clicking on a list heading you can see what users only in that list are tweeting about • People can also add you to lists of their own. • You can follow other people’s lists

  23. Summary • Twitter is a tool to interact with other people; either on a personal level or for business related means. • You can follow people of interest and see their tweets in your timeline • You can tweet, retweet, reply and direct message to people following you. • You can search twitter and all tweets for specific terms
