Understanding Audience Feedback for Music Video - Lessons Learned

This article explores the importance of audience feedback in evaluating the success of a music video. Based on a survey of 20 individuals, insights are gained into genre recognition, messaging, target audience appeal, and areas for improvement. The feedback reveals opportunities to enhance scene transitions, video quality, lighting, lip-syncing, and costume choices. The article concludes with a reflection on the significance of experimental scenes, meaningful themes, and abstract elements to captivate the audience's interest and encourage societal change.

  1. What have you learned from your audience feedback

  2. Audience feedback Audience feedback is important to know if the product produce e.g. Music video was good or bad. They look at it from their perspective therefore they can say what is right or what is wrong with the video. They also have their own opinion and might want to tell you to changes some bits. A good music video is something most of the audiences will agree on being good vis versa for bad.

  3. I interview 20 people on my Music video and this is the out come I got for these questions. Only ten people were able to recognise the correct genre of the music video which is hip hop Most people taught the message of the song is about crime Most people also taught the music video targets teenagers.

  4. These statistics show that people were not to sure, if they wanted to buy into the artist or not that is directly proportionate related to people thinking if the clothing match the genre I have gathered a variety of audience feedback by asking structured questions e.g. having a structured interview. I have gathered it by the audience watching my music video without listening to the music to guess what type music video it was and after they guess I ask them if they would buy into the artist when they could hear the music.I continued asking them Question whilst, listening to the music.

  5. My audience told me about my music video being recognisable to the genre was clear, but some disagreed with certain things. Someone taught that the co-artist should look poor, but look sexy in some ways to represent the feminine power. Most people taught it went with the conventions of hip hop. The Video quality was ok, but people said it could have been better. The changes I would make, because of audience feedback is the transition from scene to scene. Have better screenshots. Improve camera handling zoom in/zoom out including panning. Have more light when shooting the video. Make the artist lipsing to the lyrics better. Use the tripod more to take still shots. Some people argue that the costume should be more street, whilst others said they shouldn’t so decided to keep them working class clothing. They also said I should change the location, but I don’t think will take that on board as hip hop videos are shot in estates.

  6. What have you learned from your audience feedback? I have learned that my music video is good but on a novice level. That I have to experiment with misc en scene and the meaning I want the audience to leave with. The target audience of this music video is young people age range 13-25 as they might see themselves struggling with these kind of problems. They also taught I could have taken better locations to film certain scenes. That I could have enforce some of the hegemony by showing images or short little clips of how people struggle rather than them being on the street doing the same things that we see on a day to day basis. The audience also gave good feedback that they like the message of the song and it is portrayed in the music video clearly and they can identify some of the themes a hip hop music video can have e.g. buildings, post codes, people in hoodie and so fort. The comments I got on Facebook and YouTube were all positive which is good as it encouraged us to make music videos that show problems or changes that we should make in society and we learned that these type of things interest our audience. One last thing our audience also taught and like things that are abstract and new and that these things maybe could have been present in our music video to get them thinking for the next time we shoot to show them something they haven’t seen to make them think and tackle a problem or issue in different ways.
