  2. Important decisions • Students will be picking options that they will be studying for the next 2 years • Therefore it's very important that they are helped to pick subjects that they will enjoy and do well at

  3. Leading to the future • Knowledge, skills and qualifications are increasingly important in today's fast changing workplace. • Some of the kinds of jobs that will be available to your students didn't exist when we left education • Students who continue in some form of education post 16 on average earn 25% more throughout their lifetime than those who do not. • The raising of the participation age means that your students will have to remain in some form of education

  4. Leading to the future • 4 Higher Education • 3 A Levels/Vocational Qualification 2 GCSE A* - C/BTEC First Diploma • 1 GCSE D – E/Vocational Qualification • E GCSE G-E

  5. What can they do at Post 16? • Stay in full time education at BEC Post 16 or College • Study A levels or a Vocational qualification at the level suitable to them • Start an Apprenticeship

  6. It's not the end of the world • Moving on at Post 16 is about moving to the level that is right for your student and for most this will be moving onto a L3 course • If they don't manage to achieve the required GCSEs they can take a level 2 vocational qualification and then progress from there • It's about progression that is at the right level for your student

  7. What can they choose from? • All students will study English, Maths and Science at GCSE • They can then choose from other GCSEs or from a range of Vocational qualifications (BTECs, OCRs) • In order to progress to Level 3 students need 4-5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade A-C

  9. Vocational Qualifications Linked to a Job Sector Traditionally been more practical and coursework/project based Changes to these courses that Miss Dixon will talk about

What should students consider when making their option choices? • What are they best at – teamwork, practical, academic? • How do they learn best – listening, doing, writing? • What do they most enjoy? • Your student is more likely to succeed if they pick subjects that suit their interests and abilities

  11. Good reasons for choosing an option • They enjoy the subject and think that they will be good at it • It fits in with their interests, the way they learn best and what they're good at • It may lead onto a career they all ready have in mind • It gives them plenty of scope for their Post 16 option choices

  12. Inappropriate reasons for choosing an option • Their friends are doing it • They think it might be easy • They think its a good stereotypical choice for a boy/girl to do • Someone else thinks it would be a good course for them to do

  13. How can you help? • Help your student find out as much as possible • Help them identify their interests and abilities • Always remind them that learning is important • Challenge a choice if you are concerned • Encourage them to have a back-up plan in case their first choice is not available
