  4. Careers Education and Guidance during KS4 During Years 10 & 11 it is our aim for all students to be given the advice and guidance which will help them in any future career path. Our aim is for all students to:- • Have completed a 5 day work experience • Have knowledge and understanding of the careers opportunities available to them • Go into Employment, Education or training after leaving High Arcal.

Information, Advice and Guidance • PSHE programme • Careers Resource Centre (Library) • Careers Information Plasma screens • Careers websites • Interviews with Connexion Service Advisor (Iain Cole) • Enrichment Days and Visits (e.g. College and University taster days; theatre performances; careers and colleges fayres) • College visits to school • Work Experience Placement

Careers Curriculum Year 10 • 5 day work experience placement 18th -22nd July Why? • To give students an insight into the world of work • To give students an opportunity to explore a potential career path • To give students the opportunity to apply to companies and be interviewed in preparation for post 16 • Work experience forms a large section of the reference that form tutors write at the beginning of year 11

  7. Careers Curriculum Year 10 Where? • Anywhere they want • Some places have age restrictions • Some places are classed as too dangerous if inexperienced

Year 10 Work Experience • 5th October - Student assembly • Students to make contact with potential placements – phone, write or visit • School placement list • Primary schools • Dudley Council Application Form • Deadline to have found and confirmed a placement and handed in yellow form is 1st April

  9. Year 10 Work Experience – How can you support your teenager? • Complete and return reply slip • Encourage them to talk about their hopes and visions for the future. Reassure them it is all right if they don’t have clear plans. • Encourage them to find out more about careers that interest you using the Careers Resource Centre and webistes such as www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u; career programmes such as Kudos and look at course requirements in the local online 14-19 prospectus. • Support them with making calls, writing letters, making visits to companies

Careers Curriculum Year 11 • PSHE • Appropriate post 16 pathways • Application and CV writing • Interview techniques • Progress file • Careers websites and the online prospectuses • Careers Resource Centre • Connexions interviews and ‘drop in’ sessions • Careers ‘Day Off Timetable Day’ • College visits to school • Opportunities 16+ Evening for students and parents

  12. Year 11 Opportunities 16+ Evening Thursday 14th October 6pm -8pm • ‘Further Education and Training Providers Fayre’ (Local colleges, training Providers, Connexions) • Post 16 pathways • Careers websites and online prospectus

Year 11– How can you support your teenager? • Attend the Opportunities 16+ Evening (6pm-8pm) • Attend the Open Evenings/Days of the colleges/training providers that they are interested in • Encourage them to talk about their hopes and visions for the future and ideas they have about work or study. • Encourage them to research careers which may interest them in the Careers Resource Centre and also online using websites such as www.connexionsdirect.com/jobs4u, programmes such as Kudos and to look at course requirements on the online prospectus and prospectuses in the Resources Centre.

Year 11– How can you support your teenager? • Encourage them to get a Connexions interview and take advantage of ‘drop in’ sessions • Check application deadlines – popular options can get filled quickly. King Edwards VI deadline for applications is 29th January. • Encourage them to make a back up plan • Visit www.direct.gov.uk for information on young people’s choices, financial support for learning and sources of help • Encourage them to get motivated now
