What is Public Speaking? 7% of message pertaining to feelings and attitudes is in the words that are spoken. 38% of message pertaining to feelings and attitudes is paralinguistic (the way that the words are said). 55% of message pertaining to feelings and attitudes is in facial expression, gesture, eye-contact. What is so important about spoken communication? • Think about almost any aspect of public life: • E.g. government (parliamentary debate; court hearings). • E.g. business (pitch/sales presentations; contract negotiations). • E.g. media (news reporting; entertainment; sports commentary). • And for you as graduates: • Job interviews (an obvious one!) • What employers say they want. • These are situations for the pursuit of rhetoric. • ‘The art of persuasion’ – meaning persuasion through speech (Aristotle). • The focus of our lecture and essential readings in Week 5.

The approach in this unit • Learning both public speaking and public listening in three key settings: • Speeches. • Interviews. • Committee work. • Praxis – both practical and theoretical knowledge. • Ethical approaches to spoken communication. • Building confidence the only way that works — practice.

  9. Assessment Short speeches x 8 – Sessions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 (individual work, worth 8 x 5% = 40%). Scripted speech exercise – Session 8 (small groups, worth 20%). Major group presentation – Session 9 then 12 (small groups, worth 40%).
