  9. Introduction • This section breaks down the HD technology and explains the differences between High Definition and Standard Definition

  10. Objectives • Upon completion of this section you will be able to: • Describe the basics of the High Definition technology • Explain the differences between Interlaced and Progressive • List the HD display formats • Explain how to improve system dependability

  11. How is HD Different? • Wider screen • Four different resolution settings • Clarity of picture (more pixels) • Color resolution/sharpness • CD-quality digital sound

  12. HD Myths vs. Facts • HD “capable” TV’s aren’t truly HD. HD TVs are branded and have aspect ratio settings • Today, most programming is produced in standard definition and converted to HD • To be true HD, programs must be shot and edited in an HD mode • An HD TV can’t produce an HD picture without being broadcast in HD

  13. Aspect ratio refers to the height and width of the picture Standard Definition aspect ratio is 4 X 3 High Definition aspect ratio is 16 X 9 Aspect Ratio

  14. Resolution describes the crispness and clarity of the picture Each line of resolution contains pixels (the tiny blocks of light and color that make up the picture) The more pixels you have in an image, the more detail you see in the picture on the screen Resolution

  15. Display Formats • There are a number of different display formats: • 480i (SDTV) • 480p (EDTV) • 720p (HDTV) • 1080i (HDTV) • Today's HD broadcasts are produced in 720p or 1080i formats • 1080p content is available on some DVD’s and Blue Ray discs only

  16. Interlaced vs. Progressive • Interlaced Scan • Odd scan lines are displayed first and even lines are displayed second. • Progressive Scan • Scan lines are displayed line by line from top to bottom.

  20. Improved Video • Forming a TV Picture • Analog Format • Individual picture, color and sound carriers • Digital Format • All DIRECTV programming is digital • All HD programming is digital • Higher pixel rates mean sharper detail

  21. Cables & Connectors • Component (Y/Pb/Pr) • Component video is an analog signal that provides an excellent video picture • Separate RCA or optical cables are required for audio • Most HDTVs and HD receivers will have the inputs and outputs for them

  22. Cables & Connectors • Component (Y/Pb/Pr) video is converted from the RGB video signal (Y/Pb/Pr) Carries luma /brightness information Carries the difference between red and luma Carries the difference between blue and luma

  23. Cables & Connectors • Composite • Composite video transmits brightness/luma (Y) and colors/chroma (U and V) over a single cable • With this connection you must use the analog mono left & right audio connections

  25. Cables & Connectors • S-Video • Known as Super Video, this is a color format that combines the three YUV video signals into two channels (brightness/luma (Y) and color/chroma (U and V))

  26. Cables & Connectors • Digital Optical Audio • Digital optical audio is often used to transmit audio to home theater receivers • Digital optical audio connections transmit Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 • RCA connections only carry analog stereo audio

  31. Introduction • This section explains the B-band converter and how to integrate the HD / HD DVR with the customer’s equipment

  32. Objectives • Upon completion of this section, you will able to: • Explain when and where to install the B-Band Converter (BBC) • Describe the specifics of the H20, H21 HD receivers and the HR20, HR21 HD DVR receivers • Integrate the HD receivers with the customer’s equipment

  33. B-Band Converter • Ka LNB frequencies are between 250Mhz and 750Mhz • H20, H21, HR20, HR21 are unable to view these frequencies • BBC up-converts the B-Band into a 1650-2150Mhz usable spectrum • Must be used on each HD receiver tuner

  40. Software Download • When installing any receiver, new software is required before going through guided setup • To get the required software enter “02468” on the remote when the receiver displays the “Hello Welcome to DIRECTV” screen

IRD Integration • Always use the best connections available • The best video and audio connections are always determined by the inputs on the customers equipment. • HDMI provides both audio and video signals • Any other video input will require an additional audio input • Always connect existing surround sound systems using the best available audio output

  48. HD Verification • Channel 480: “103 B-Band Odd (13v). BBC Confirmed Working.” • Channel 481: “103 B-Band Even (18v). BBC Confirmed Working.” This confirms that the receiver has signal @ the 103° location as well as that the BBC is up-converting

  50. Activity - Receiver Integration • In your assigned groups and work stations, integrate the receiver with the TV • Since each TV is different, when your group completes an integration rotate to the next work station 30 minutes
