System Overview • The SwitchPlusIP system provides operators the ability to interface with radio, telephone and intercom services. • The system is comprised of the following basic components: • Operator Positions • Communications Server Units (CSU) • Radio Interface Units (RIU) • The basic system components are interconnected via Ethernet and managed by dual redundant LAN Interface Units. • The system is monitored and managed by the Maintenance Server Unit (MSU)

System Overview – Network • Network Configurations • The SwitchPlusIP™ product is designed to be used in networks that contain: • Single site with co-located radios and/or operator positions • Single site with co-located and remote radios and/or operator positions • Multiple sites with radios and/or operator positions

System Overview – Network • Single Site Systems • Only one central database stores system information which is stored on the CSUs at the main site. • Radios and operator positions may be co-located (i.e. at the same physical site) or located remotely where a communication link is setup to connect equipment to different sites. This will allow operators to access radios located both locally and remotely.

System Overview – Network • Multiple Site Systems • Each site has its own database that stores system information on its CSU. • Radios and operator positions may be co-located or remoted • A communication link is used to allow communication between the different sites. This allows operators from one site to access local assets at their site as well as remote assets at other sites.

  10. System Maintenance Training Course1. System Overview – Network • Network Redundancy • The SwitchPlusIP™ product uses the following types of network redundancy setups: • Single LAN topology (no network redundancy) • Dual-redundant LAN topology • Active Standby Topology

System Overview – Network • Single LAN topology • In a Single LAN topology, all equipment is connected to a single LAN, as the name suggests. • Should any piece of equipment’s connection to the LAN fail (such as an OIU, RIU or CSU), its resources are lost as there is no other network communication path for the unit. • Therefore if an OIU loses its Ethernet connection (such as the port is blocked at the switch or the cable is disconnected or broken), that operator position is lost. • For an RIU, its radio resources are lost. • For a CSU, if the system only contains one CSU, all radio and telephony services are lost; however, if the system contains two CSUs, the secondary CSU will manage radio and telephony resource connections.

System Overview – Network • It is recommended that if a Single LAN topology is used, a very high availability IP switch is used to minimize the likeliness of a switch port failing. • Note: If the switch completely fails, all services are lost. • Dual CSUs should be used so as to prevent system failure should the Master CSU • lose connection for any reason.

System Overview – Network • Dual-redundant LAN topology • In a Dual-redundant LAN topology, all equipment is connected to two (2) LANs (i.e. LAN A and LAN B). • Data is sent on both LAN A and LAN B to and from the CSU(s). • In this situation, should any piece of equipment’s connection to LAN A fail, its resources are not lost as it will still have a network connection on LAN B. • Note: In order to maintain a dual-redundant topology between remote locations or additional sites (for multiple site systems), two communication links must be used and two IP switches are required at each location and/or site. A single communication link can be used to connect the locations and/or sites using routers but this will make the link routers and the link a single point of failure.

System Overview – Network • Active-Standby topology • In an Active-Standby LAN topology, all equipment is connected to two (2) LANs (i.e. LAN A and LAN B). • Data is sent to/from the CSU(s) only on LAN A but not on LAN B unless the LAN A connection fails for the piece of equipment. • In this situation, should any piece of equipment’s connection to a switch fail, its resources are not lost as it will still have a network connection. Audio may be lost temporarily as the equipment switches from using LAN A to LAN B. The impact is minimal. • Note that in order to maintain a fully dual-redundant topology between remote locations or additional sites (for multiple site systems), two communication links must be used and two switches are required at each location and/or site. A single communication link can used to connect the locations and/or sites using routers but this will make the link routers and the link a single point of failure.

System Overview – Network • Communication across a WAN • As stated earlier, the SwitchPlusIP™ product has the ability to remotely access radios at the same site and across multiple sites using a communication link. If other resources that are not part of the SwitchPlusIP™ system will also need to use the communication link (eg. across a WAN), care must be taken to ensure that the system will not fail. The following points must be considered: • Bandwidth usage – Depending on the system size, the bandwidth usage may be quite large. The WAN must be able to cater for the requirements or the system performance may be impacted. • IP Plan – Devices that are not part of the SwitchPlusIP™ system can not share the same IP addresses or use the same multicast ports. • Network Isolation – Need to verify that devices outside the system are blocked from writing to or monitoring anything on the IP Plan.

System Overview – Network • Network Isolation • If a switch that is to be used for the SwitchPlusIP™ product will also be connected to other equipment not used in the system, measures may need to be taken to keep other equipment from being able to send or receive traffic to and from the system. It can also be used to prevent network traffic loops on the system if equipment is connected across both switches in a Dual-redundant solution. • If a layer 3 switch is used, one means of isolating IP traffic between its ports is by using VLANs. Each VLAN configured for the switch will have its own layer 2 network; this means that it can will be kept completely isolated from the other VLANs on the switch. • Port VLAN switching can be used to assign each port of a switch to a specific VLAN and then only the specified IP traffic configured for the VLAN is permitted to enter and/or leave the port.

Fault Monitoring and Diagnosis • Maintenance Scripts • The Backup utility will archive all the Logviewer activity for the master CSU with the exception of the last 24 hours • This is a maintenance activity that should be performed every 30 days • To perform the backup, simply type in the MSU address (generally the default value) and then press the Start Backup button • It will display its progress on the page and then say "Done" when completed
